Default Starting A New Build

so my godfather who acts as my mechanic for my motorcycle surprised us yesterday and came over to our house...
we worked on our bikes for awhile and afterwards sat down to watch Desert Racing trophy trucks
out of nowhere he says i need to start racing xc
he said he is going to start a build for me since he has all the stuff left over from when he raced
He was even sponsored and ranked number 5 in california for xc racing
he was fast!
now he;s trying to get me to do that and said in the next month he should have me an alumimnum hardtail XC bike that weighs about 22 pounds
only thing is he told me i needed to use V-brakes
oh well since he's going to make it for me i mine as well take it and train with it and race it eventually
once he tells me its done ill be shooting pictures on here for sure

Cool deal Brandon, maybe I'll see you on the trails then. If you need any parts, I have an XTR FD952 34.9 TS/BP, and XTR RD952. Let me know. Gene

thanks
but my godfather kevin said he had a bunch of parts left over from his old racing bikes
he said disc brakes are "forced" technology and v brakes work good enough
and he said that he is going to bling it with carbon fiber handlebars and stuff like taht but he said if i crash on it i need to replace the carbon fiber cuz it will randomly become "stressed" and can crack too easily after being crashed
but i cant wait im excited... he just forgets alot so ill have to remind all day everyday... he said hopefully within this next month he will have something for me...

Yo - A buddy of mine hooked me up with a hardtail frame. He used to have it just below 23 pounds as his racer XC. He said if I want to keep it light, I have to use V-brakes. In dry CA, he says, there's no real need for discs for all the XC courses he's seen. And he runs a small racing mtn team. I'm still on the fence though whether I'll go V-brake. I have to in the rear, but I might go with as lightweight a disc as possible up front. The Magura Marty and Hayes Strokers come to mind. But maybe I'll save some money and weight and stick with V-brake.

have you seen those brakes that are like midget sized?
i think theyre made by formula
hmm ill look for the link... i think theyre made to be axtra light
from the reviews i read it said not a brake to lock up but good brake to ease you to a stop... i think they would be perfect for a front xc brake... give me a few minutes and ill find the link

found it... theyre made by hope
and they have 2 mini models... the mono mini sound better from reviews... ill let you check them out yourself...

Hope Mono Mini Reviews

V brakes are fine for XC racing, it all depends on the fork you use. Some of the new light weight forks have no V brake bosses as well as some frames. Especially XC F/S like my Tomac that's pictured in my signiture. I guess that's what you call "forced Technology"

yea i guess that what he meant...

but if my xc fork that he puts on didnt have v brake mounts i would use those mono mini's or the other mini's as front brakes and v brakes in tha rear

There's nothing wrong with V-brakes, providing you don't need to use brakes on long downhills or at the bottom of a long hill, or if you are riding in the rain or if you ever cross streams (I have a good story about that one). The other downside to V-brakes is that you have to use heavier rims to accomodate the rim braking surface.

Otherwise it's ok to settle for Vs. I had them, and I once saw no need to go with discs...until I rode with discs. Of course, back when I had cantis, I thought V-brakes were all hype, too...until I tried them.

but if my godfather is buying and IF he still has hid connections it could go way down in price
and you know almost nobody pays completely full price for anything... everyone is always getting off a few bucks here and there
