This past weekend as we were riding I found that everytime I applied a lot of pressure to the pedals, it would skip and a few times almost caused a crash. It's impossible to stand on the pedals. When I put it in the stand and try to duplicate it, it doesn't happen as I can't apply the force needed to simulate myself standing or mashing on the pedals. I've moved the barrel adjust almost all the way from all the way in, to all the way out and still I experience this problem. It seems like a simple adjustment but without being able to have it happen in the stand, I just can't dial it in. Any suggestions?

Ya see, that's why ya ride a singlespeed!
If possible, try to identify if the chain is skipping (jumping over the gear) or derailling to another gear. Have someone watch when it happens. It could also be a bad freewheel. It could be a number of things, such as frame flex, misaligned derailleur (bent hanger/adjustment), worn cassette/chain. Also, what hub do you have? |

Could be that you just thrashed your bike on National, that trail has a bad habit of eating bikes.
It was not skipping before AZ trip, replaced derailleur and now it skips. I would question if the derailleur hanger was straight. But it sounds like worn cassett and chain, maybe new derailluer does not have as much tension.

Sorry should have mentioned I put on a new derailuer, chain, and hanger, they all got thrashed on National. The rings are less then a year old, in fact the whole bike is just barely a year old and I've already dumped another 800 bucks into it. This mtb'ing is really getting expensive. I haven't put 500 bucks into my road bike in 4 years and I've got over 20,000 miles on it.

Throw your bike on the stand, take a real good look at your drive train componants, if you find the word 'Shimano' on anything, don't panic. Carefully remove the item & dispose of it properly. Replace with items brandishing the words SRAM on them!
Now you'll find things smooth & happy, feel free to mash away ![]()

Hold on, let me get this straight. You put a new chain on worn cassette? And, don't give this year old crap. You put hard miles on your bikes, brother. Even I know that if you replace the chain you're gonna have to replace the cassette and chainrings.
Or, I read that someplace. Sheldon Brown? Or, I could just f*** off now. Anyway, I'm going to side with the dirty wrench and say that your new chain ain't playing well with your worn cassette.

Brand new chain and hanger, but I'll check the cassette again. Looking back on my ride log (mostly for the road rides) I don't see more then 1700 miles on this cassette.
. Just seen jensons has the same casette for 57 bucks, that's worth it to change it.

I just ordered the SRAM PG990 from Price Point. I ordered the '05 for less money and they shipped me an '06 (at the '05 price) I don't remember exactly, but I think it was $45
If it was me, I'd replace the chainrings or at least the middle, the chain and cassette all at the same time. Don't forget to check the cables. I've had bad housing on a couple occassions cause the same problems. It drove me crazy trying to adjust. C |

Hey Pain, are you talking about a SRAM PG970 for $57.00 at Jensens? Because if you are, Performance has it for $34.99. But $45 for a PG990, you can't beat that price anywhere
