Bikes don't kill bunnies

Default Which Shock?

Would you run for a 6-7.5" single pivot setup? Going to be a "do it all" bike with a bias towards being able to go down/over anything I come up against(whether I currently have the skills or not) . Basically a FR rig with dual rings up front.

All of the above are new. I'm looking at a Rocco World Cup, Manitou Swinger 6 way, or Progressive 5th element. I know the 5th element is no longer made, but either that or the Manitou can be had new for less than a Rocco OEM deal. So bearing all that in mind, which shock would you run?

I apologize in advance for not being able to go into specifics on the frame just yet.

You can't go wrong with a Fox DHX 5.0 coil either. 15 ProPedal settings and rebound is the shiznit!!

Pacman,

This aint for the Xtreme (though that should be showing up today as well). Simply due to the MFG of the frame I'm looking at only being setup with Marzocchi, I'm soley looking at the Rocco, Swinger 6 way, or the 5th element. The later of the three are still cheaper as Santa Cruz blowouts when compared to the frame with the OEM Rocco pricing. I'll check back with the MFG on the TST R pricing and go from there. Adrenaline shows the TST R as less expensive via retail pricing, but I don't know if it's a regular stocking part for the MFG.

So just to confirm, of the selections above, most here would choose the Rocco TST-R over the other options even if it runs 100-150 more?

Thanks in advance,
Chris

Why wouldn't the DHX be a viable option?? Just curious.

Pacman,

No Fox simply based on price. I've got a tight budget (as usual) and since the mfg only deals in Zoke, its that or the Manitou/Progressive deals off of Santa Cruz's page to keep things on the cheap.

Tk, not Transition this time. Great bikes, but I'm trying something different. As soon as it's a done deal, I'll post up with pics and all. It will defintely be something "different" though.

I'm also building up a "cough" Haro "cough" as a cheap fs replacement to my Vagrant which will be listed for sale in a couple of seconds.

Chris

MFG doesn't stock the TST-R, but they can get it, so no worries there. My cost is set on the shock if I buy it today or a month from now, so that is cool and got me to thinkin...

Why wait for the frame to get here by holding things up with an order for the TST? I could nab a 5th Element or Swinger from the SC website, then ride the frame a little sooner. If the shock could use some improvement, I order up the TST-R from the MFG, and Ebay the orriginal shock. The upside is saving a couple hundy if the 5th or Swinger 6way will work for my purposes, the downside is maybe not recouping all of my money out of the shock if I want to upgrade.

Sooo with that in mind, if I were going to try the 5th or Swinger 6way before deciding on the extra $$ for the TST, which shock is better? 5th Element or the Swinger 6 way?

Chris

I'm happy with my 5th. I've not ridden any of the others so I won't try to e-compare. Mine has never let me down but from what I hear there is no more support for them. If that's true I might go another way.

Oh what the heck, I'll Pink Bike it.

Dude, get the 5th. It's hands down better then any other shock only because that's what I have and have not ridden any of the other stuff. So with that said, 5th's the best! lol

Thanks Dave

Actually there is support for it... if I want to send it overseas to TF. Hopefully some folks will chime in with input on the Manitou. To me it's 6 of one/half dozen of the other, so I figgued I'd ask around a bit.

I do like the pinkbike review though. So absolute and compelling. I'd be a fool not to get the 5th based on that info

BTW, Dave YGPM in a second.

We sell the Rocco at Adrenaline for $310, and I took a DHX 5.0 off of my bike and replaced it with the Rocco, I feel the Rocco is a much better shock. The DHX 5.0 also sells for $400. Also if you want the option for a ti spring they don't fix on the DHX if you need a spring over 450#.

I had my 5th Element sent in to progressive and it came back just as bad as before. I buoght a Swinger6/way and dig it. I no longer break near as much as I did with the 5th Element.

It stayed loaded while riding. It may have been just the shock that I had but I did send it in to be re-built and it still had issues.

Just a note on the 5th elements. Steve at Garageworks has an aftermarket mod he's working on that the DH race team is gonna try this year. He had a whole table full of them when I was there so I asked. I don't think he's released it to the public yet though. But if you're worried about future service, it looks like you could at least use garageworks...

Pho'

I know that someone on RM had posted up a mod to make the 5th a shimmed type damper setup. Since I went the cheapo route with the 5th to save some $$ for now, I'd be interested to hear about the mod as things progress. The only caveat is that with the Rocco being pretty cost competitve, the mods to the 5th from Garage Works would have to be pretty light on the wallet. When you consider you can dump your 5th on ebay for more than it cost new from SC's blowout page, I'm not loosing any ground if I decide to upgrade to the Rocco later.
