What does it mean when there is a lot of popping noises coming from the cranks when pedaling?

Could be:
Bad bottom bracket
Loose bottom bracket
Crank not completely mated to the bottom bracket
Loose chainring bolts
Pedals not attached completely to cranks
Pedals in need of service

I experienced this when I first got my Merlin:

I would get rice crispies noises from the cranks sometimes. As it turns out there were metal shavings that were still in the tubes from the machining process that had worked their way down to the bottom bracket. After removing them it was fine. Dunno if this is the case with you but it might help

It could be alot of things. How long have you had the bike and when was the last time it was serviced?

Add to the list -
Chain or cassette/freehub problem. The tension in the chain transmits the sound to your cranks.

What kind of cranks do you have?

If they are ISIS I would bet $10 it is a worn BB.

I second that! Are you only hearing it, or are you feeling the pop also?

This may sound stupid, but take the chain off, put your ear on the end of your seat, and give your cranks a spin. If your clearly hear it, it's your BB.

Lucky for me, the snaps, crackles, and pops coming from my knees easily drown out any noises from my bike (as well as any low-flying jets).

Is that bad?
