Default Lightweight, affordable XC wheels?

Anyone have any specific suggestions for a good, lightweight XC wheelset that won't break the bank? (disc) I thinking no more than $500 a set, hopefully less.

I ride the Mavic 317s that came with my '06 Giant Trance 2. Call me lazy, but I'd like to have a second set for the odd XC race here or there and not have to fuss with swapping tires everytime. Plus, it just seems to make sense to have an extra wheelset that I keep in good shape for a race.

are you looking for hand made or would you be satisfied with machine built wheels?

Look into DT swiss. Ive been thinking about getting the 240s with 4.1d rims for some time to replace the xt/317 I have on my NRS. A little bit expensive but they are some light wheels.

I'd go handbuilt, I guess, but I assume that makes them more expensive.

The Path just hand built a set for a friend of mine that came out below your $500 budget, really nice wheels.

Blue Hope Pro 2 hubs
Silver DT Double butted spokes
Blue alloy nips
DT 4.1d rims

Give us a call or stop for a visit. We can show you some different options and prices; you would be suprised at what you could get for $500...

thats a solid build right there, i'm loving my proII's so far. about 1000+ miles on them with no probs. i've heard really good things about those DT240s hubs as well, but they're a step up price wise from the hopes.

You could buy a really light set of American Classic wheels! Anyone shop with BTI can get them quick.

glad you specified wheel color, because blue bikes are the shiz, and since they're not my wheels....

I prefer irie green to 'ghey' and slow blue anyway

actually I put the green wheel on my blue SS for this morning's ride, just to try the resolution on the rigid bike back to back against the rampage. I'm glad Fo Eye for the Straight Guy was not there, I was clashing.

had the path build me up a set of King ISO on Mav 717's and an older set of WTB laserdisc lite on same rims. think the set with Kings will take you through budget but WTB should not be an issue. Not as durable as Kings but i'm happy with them on my XC HT

matt, how did the resolution work for ya? from everything i've read they roll faster than a rampage, and the grip is really close....did that hold true?

Bret
definitely felt like it rolled faster, but they were also on a lighter wheels so (?). Grip was almost as good as the rampage, i think the resolution will let go a little before the rampage would in a high speed corner, but predictably. What was the most drastic to me was that the rampage was more comfy for the rigid ride (both at same PSI).

I've been riding the resolution on my squishy fork for a couple months now and have loved it. But I actually think I push my rigid bike harder.

when we going for a SS ride?

I was able to pick up a set of new handbuilt DT Swiss 240S with the 4.1d rims on e-bay for $400 including shipping. I think I got pretty lucky. I was seeing them go for $500+ when I was watching them on e-bay. I also saw a set of American Classics go for around 500 when I was watching too. If you're not in a hurry there are some good deals to be had.

Do an e-bay search for Magura wheelsets. They are private labeled DT Swiss hubs hand laced to a variety of rims. They usually have DT Swiss 240's with DT Comp spokes and Mavic 717's ~ $300

Factory direct from Magura in IL.

Deal of the century.

I bought a free ride wheelset from them.
