Default super GNAR brake squeal

well, SART made my brakes squeal last weekend. ive since broken the glaze with some sand paper and scotchbrite on the rotors and pads, then cleaned them with alcohol. broke them in by doing slow gradual decelerations from 15 miles perhour, 20 times. around time 5 they started to squeal again. times 6-20 squeal got louder, rode the jedi trail last night, still loud. other suggestions? braking power is good, just an aweful noise emitting from the lil guys.

brakes are Hayes HFX-9 with 6" rotor.

i had that problem and i wasn't getting as much stopping power so i changed out pads to a pair of organic pads (cant remember who made em) they didn't make much noise after that and the power was back

If you used sandpaper you just scratched up your rotor.

nothing bent to the best of my knowledge. all bolts tight. maybe ill try the organic pads. dont those wear faster?

oh yeah, anyone know of the "proper" break in procedure for these? ive tried the gradual and the hard breaking ones..

Red face Adjust the mounts baby

I find that if you loosen the mounting bolts & re align the brakes that normally takes care of the problem.

haha, thanks for the overstatement nam.

word up Edog, wouldnt have thought of that as a reason, always thought it would be a contamination/glazing issue.

I've found the best way to break Hayes brakes in is to use them hard. Don't be gentle with them. When I first set them up, I go out into the street and do about 30 hard stops (weight shifted back for the front stops). Even after doing this, sometimes it can still take a few rides with long, high-speed braking sections (my Hayes El Caminos took an exceptionally long time).

I've also wondered about using anti-squeal grease, like what they use on cars. You don't put it on the pad itself, but where the metal-on-metal contact happens where the pad is seated. Anybody else try it?

In my experience, to get rid of squeal I wiped down the rotor with a dry towel. Then I took out the pads and wiped them down on the same towel. Finally, I pushed in the hydraulic caliper and re-installed the pads.

In my on going attempts to keep my Juicy 7's silent, I have used Permatex Disc Quite: between the rotor and hub, on all the bolts, where the pads contact the pistons, where the caliper mounts to the frame....ect....waist of time.

I don't have noise problems with my Hayes Mags like I do my Juicy 7's. I have a large collection of different brands of rotors and pads. Solution keeping playing with them, try different brand pads.

yeah, i had thought about using the quiet stuff on the MTB, as its worked witht he rangerito and the gnarly davidson, but i figured ill just leave it be. not only because it doesnt affect braking performance, but because it acts of a kind of warning alert for hikers, haha.

I was having the same problem and tried every solution under the sun. I finally faced the disc tabs and that did the trick.
