Yo - I thought I'd mine the collective experience on the forum before shopping for a bike rack.
I've got a 4Runner and would like to put a hitch mounted rack on the back that would work for everything from road bikes to trail bikes (2 at a time is enough). My major need is that it folds up towards the trunk when not in use since I park it in a very short garage. I might only have a foot and a half to spare behind the rig. I think Thule makes one that folds up. Not sure who else. Also, some means to lock the bikes is essential too. Any recommendations? What's worked for you? What hasn't? |

I picked up a Yakima hookup 2 about a month ago and I really like it. The trays/arms are actually more sturdy than my friends thule/sportworks which is why I got it. However, the thule has more of a quick release mechanism for folding up the rack, where my yakima has pin which can be a pain. So you might lean towards the thule. Neither rack has a great solution for locking the bike, I just use a regular cable lock when I need to. I can't speak for the saris, but that looks nice too.

I have the Thule T2 hitch rack and love it. One of my rigs has a thru-axle so much easier than taking of front wheel.
Yep, folds up but not sure what "depth" at that point. Can lock arm to front tire but i also use a cable if I am gonna be away from truck with bikes on rack for a while. also think some lock rack to hitch. Rack system is not cheap but worth it IMO ![]()

Can you add on to the Hollywood bike rack, for a total of 4 bikes? I need something that will hold up to 4 bikes, including 29'er wheels (some of the clamp downs will only click down once due to the size of the wheel)

So I REALLY liked the Thule T2. It looks well built, it's really slick with its fold-down and fold up options. But I ended up going with the simple, affordable Rocky Mounts for the roof rack. I had a couple concerns with the T2:
First off, I'm wary of having my pricey bikes on the back of the car where they can get rear-ended by any one of this city's bazillion moron drivers. Yeah, maybe insurance would cover it, but that can be a bureaucratic nightware. Secondly, the T2's built-in locking mechanism on the support arms is only effective with thru-axle bikes (big bikes), which I'd love to have but don't. I'm transporting road bikes and XC FS mtn bikes -- all with quick release levers. With the T2, a thief can undo the front quickrelease and just pull the bike frame away. Yes, I could try to avoid that by adding an aftermarket cable lock around the bikes but cables don't stop a determined thief with a cable cutter and Thule provides no welded, hardmounted loops on the swingarms to incorporate aftermarket cables, or preferably U-Locks. Once they put loops on that swing-arm to accomodate U-locks, I'll be more interested. It's like bikes. There's always advantages and trade-offs to every model. |

Dood I love this rack. If you can find an easier way to attach a bike to a rack let me know. Until then, check this out. The price is great too.
