Default Race Face Vs. Shimano

I am about due for a new crank... but I'm on a budget... I have my eye on these two Shimano LX - Race Face Evolve XC X-Type...

Please give me some advise...
Ps... advantages between 175 and 170mm arms...

Thank you for your time....

Crankarms should be sized relative to your legs in order to ensure proper biomechanics. If you're average height you'll probably like either 170 or 175 just fine. If you are shorter than 5'7" i'd definitely lean toward the 170s. If you are taller than 5'11" i'd definitely lean toward the 175s.

I've been riding raceface cranks for several years and like em. Haven't ridden LX cranks but had a set of XTs that were stellar.

I recently had the same choice and went with the Race Face, why? I don't know. But I'm happy with them so far. Smoking deal and massive weight savings over my original cartridge bearing cranks.

I had a set of Race Face Deus XC (x-type) for a long time probably 5 + years. In the end I got a super nice set of XTRs on the cheap... but the rings for the XTRs cost about 5 times what a set for the Race Face would cost.

Price and endurance can't be beat for the Race Face but I believe they are similar in quality. I have had both but I give the nod to RF.

If you have the cash go with the shimano since they use a better approach to holding the crank arm on. I have had trouble with the crank bold style that is used with Race Face.

I have been using the Race Face Deus XC (x-type) for about 5yrs and not have had any issues what so ever with them. And when it comes time to swap out the rings, it will only run you about $80.00 tops.

I think the rings shift better on Shimano too.

I also have snapped a set of RF's. Half-way down the arm. It sucks riding out with one leg. I have no idea how Mr Wolf does it.

As for size, if you have other bikes, see what size they are. I try to stay with the same sized cranks on all my bikes.

Shimano also has NO bottom bracket bearing problems like race face do....
Shimano rings shift better
Shimano crank arms dont get loose with the pinch bolt attachment..... race face do...

Look into the SHimano SLX. The weight is near XTs and much cheaper.

I kept bending the middle ring on my RF XC evolves. Had to replace it with a steel one. Bottom bracket seized after 4 months. Second one lasted about 5 months.
No problems at all with my XTs.

If you can swing the extra $30, then I would go for these:

Race Face cranks = JUNK! The BB/crank interface is a joke, the non-drive side bearings fail way quicker than Shimano. The crank arms themselves are needlessly machined and protrude way out, with the arm edges always threatening to catch and bash your ankles.

Shimano SLX are way better. The bearings still wear out kinda fast, but not nearly as fast as RF.

So i'm not the only one who has lost ankle skin on these things?

Also, depends on how much climbing you do.

I like a disproportionately long crankarm for courses with a ton of climbing. The increased leverage is noticable.

For flatter, crit-like trails where you want to spin a higher rpm, shorter is easier to keep in a circle and really wind out.

I bought a set of those LX cranks from Jensons about a year ago for my single speed. I ride it about 20 miles a week, and I've never had a problem with them. Great cranks for the price.

Edit:

Also the raceface cranks didn't have pinch bolts. After dealing with truvativ and their arms that keep coming off I don't think I'll ever buy another crankset without pinch bolts.
