Default Fork Service Question

So I was working on my fork (Lyrik) today and noticed that the little spring on the seal is broken. Is it really needed?

If you are referring to the tension spring for the external rod wiper, yes they are put there for a reason. That is, over time the seal and stanchion wear. In doing so the amount may be minimal, but it is nonetheless wearing, by using a tension spring you are accomodating this wear occurance. In short it helps provide seal pressure even when the seal is slightly worn.

So it will live for the time being until I can get a new one.

Sure! You can go visit your friendly, neighborhood fork rebuilder, and he's probably got a bunch of them stashed away in a bucket under the workbench.

But... I've only worked on models of forks, mind you... Don't you have to take apart the fork to install the spring, and if that's the case, wouldn't it make good sense to just buy a rebuild kit?

The fork doesnt need to be rebuilt though. I just went through replaced all the fluids and checked all the o-rings. Plus it doesnt have that many hours on it. I can pull the lowers replace the spring pretty quick.

Yeah that should be correct, the control oil should all be up top, all youll need is some lube oil and your good.

Think I could send you some money to stick one in an envelope and send one to me. Kinda far to go to Lake Elsinore for a little spring.
