Default Lets Talk Gears

First I ask because I don't know much about gearing. How much diffeence is there between 11-32T and 11-34T cassettes? If looking for lower (easier) gears for climbing will this change make a difference? Will I give up much on the tall end?

My bike is an 08 Trek Fuel EX 8.0 stock set up is SRAM PG-970 9-speed 11-31T. Crank is Shimano M542 custom 44/32/22. Rear derailleur is Shimano Deore XT Shadow, long derailleur. Shifters are Shimano SLX SL. These components seem to work great together.

This weekend all the LBS have sales going on an now would be a good time to pick one up.

And for my final question which manufacturer and model should I go with? This is not an open door for SRAM vs Shimano debate, but rateher I don't know the differences between Nickel-Plated Steel and Chrome-Plated Steel of the SRAM or the Aluminum/Steel of Shimano. Generally speaking I prefer to stay away from chrome. Attached is a comparrison of the most likely candidates.

The difference is very noticeable between the 34 and 32 cassette. If you like to spin granny, get the 34. The 32t should be a bit lighter.

I can't help with the differences in material or plating.

I have had very good luck with the Sram 990.

Lightbulb The search button and MTBR are your friends.

Shop on quality not price, Shimano uses higher grade steel, and ratios are relative to how much you ride.

Use the search button or just merge onto the countless other gearing threads...

HG/IG tech is HG/IG tech. The technology behind Shimano and Srams's gears are the same. They all last long when maintained properly....lube your chain....check for stretch.......So my advice would be to get the lightest you can, for what your comfortable spending

No difference in the tall end. Your speed gear is 11 on both 11-32 and 11-34. The only difference is that you can't find the perfect gears if they're spaced out too much on an 11-34. Road cassettes are compact, which tend to cater to the best efficiency. 10 speed road cassettes can be as compact as 12-23.

I should have also pointed out this cassette is for a back up set of wheels. I've got all the parts except the cassette so I thought trying something new might be in order. Easier granny and ability to stay in the center ring longer are pretty good benefits. I'm going to try the 11-34. I appreciate all the help.

When you switch wheels check the shifting (limit screws) by running through the gears on a workstand. You don't want find out when you ride that your new granny gear puts the chain into the spokes.
