Lethal when nessesary

I have an '04 Fox F80 X and Yesterday about halfway home I realized that it was acting like a pogo stick.
When I got home I tried to Diagnose the problem and to the best I can figure I need new seals and an oil change, but to be safe I called Fox. I have yet to find a mechanic anywhere that was less sure of the situation than the one I spoke to . All he wanted to do was set up a return assist for when I send in my fork. When I finally got a little out of him he mentioned that I could have worn out the Inertial Valve and that it might need to be replaced. Then he told me the prices for the service and the part in question. WTF bro, you were going to have me send in my fork and then what, call me and tell me I needed a $200 part, cause yeah I got that kind of cash laying around . I couldn’t come to believe that a company like FOX would have such a sales driven mechanic team so I called back and spoke to a different person, I thought I was going somewhere and might even have a chance at getting some kind of firm estimate of what’s going on, but as soon as we got to the meat, BAM! “lets set up a return assist” came flying across my bow . Sorry for the rant, but I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. I've dismantled my Dodge to the Crank, and rebuilt it twice. I’ve fixed several other cars / Motorcycles. If I ask a mechanic what’s going on and tell him symptoms he’ll make an educated guess based on their knowledge and experience. Ok, I may be biased and a little mechanically inclined; but come on MAN! How hard is it to fix forks? There are only two sides, spring or dampener; I told you that it is the dampener side, all I asked is what could cause the Valve to remain Open, I’m not going to hold you to your word, just give me an Idea. Hell overload me with info so I feel like I have to send it in. At this point I am shocked and disappointedWhat does it take to do an oil change? Are seals and bushings something I can pick up at my LBS, or do I have to but them from FOX? I want to fix this problem but right now I can't justify spending, $50 in shipping, $60 Service charge, another $40 in basic parts, and possibly over $200 in extra parts. HELP! P.S. Could PUSHing this fork help?

I have major issues with Fox's customer services....they lost me as a repeat customer. No more Fox Forks.
I currently have a Fox rear shock, if it ever need work I would send it to Push not back to Fox. It does not seem right that you buy a $280 rear shock then spend another $245, send to to Push to make it better. Call me crazy, but at $280 it should not need more work, it should be able to be tuned to a riders preferences out of the box. Through the years I have had my bike down due to fork shock problems more than all other component problems combined. Take it to the Path. In the past they have fixed all my Fox Forks problems. I am not sure but I remember hearing that the Teralogic Forks are not end user friendly to work on. If you chose to tackle the fix yourself The Path will most likely have parts you need in stock.

Directionally Challenged

I sent my Fox Talas in once that was long past due on a warranty and they still replaced the entire internals for free. They did ask me how I managed to bend and or break every possible part in it. I just told them I rode down the Mt Wilson Trail, and that pretty much was it. It took them about two weeks to repair, and because they were late sending it out the paid the freight back.

The oil and seal change is simple. Buy the goodies through Enduro Fork Seals (google it). You'll also need a good 6-point 26mm socket.
I had good experience with Fox Customer Service on my Talas but it sounds like I'm in the minority here. I doubt many companies will try to diagnose a problem over the phone. Think about this scenario - The tech makes an educated guess on a problem and it ends up being something more expensive. I think your rant would be amplified. C |

I need a tow truck ASAP

I just put Enduro seals and of course changed the oil on bananaseat's Fox Vanilla fork last week. The process is actually fairly simple. He can probably chime in on how the fork is performing now. The problem is if you let the fork run out of oil then it could need just more than the seals/oil change.

Jared,
Changing the seals/oil is easy. If you haven't already, download the service manual for the 04 forks and familiarize yourself with the guts of your deal. There are also air seal kits available and since you'll have it appart, maybe now would be a good time to do it. Good luck with it, Chris |
