so on my downhill/freeride..... right now ive got a 38T in the front & an 11/32T casette in the back with a long throw LX derailleur...
http://www.nashbar.com/profile.cfm?c...%20Derailleurs and i get chain slap like no other.... its annoying as hell. Can i put a short/mid throw/cage derailleur on instead to help alleviate this? was thinking http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...t&isfrommerc=1 or Shimano XTR RD-M960 RD-M952 Oo and the chain is as short as it can get.... i get pedal feedback & the chain actually needs to be longer cuz it gets pushed out when the rear swingarm cycles out.... so ya.... opinions..... suggestions?? thanks Eric |

Yes absolutely you can run a short cage rear der. since you only have 1 ring in front. SRAM rear derailuers have stiffer springs and control chain slap much better than Shimano derailuers do however. If you don't want to go with a SRAM derailuer then I'd look into a chainguide/tensioner system if you don't already have one.

um ive got an XT shifter... it wont work with SRAM stuff huh? somthing about 2:1 vs 1:1.... can some1 clue me in a lil on what will work with what? ive got a E 13 chainguide/bash-thing commin in the mail... and yes i rode without one @ mammoth.... and yes... the damn chain came off..... alot.. it was quite annoying... but i learned to just keep pedaling, never backpedal... that kept the chain on ok.... what setup do you reccomend? if you were to do it urself? well said... haha... The E-13 should take care of all your issues then, no need to really switch your derailuer.....but you still could run a short cage if you wanted to absolutely......it would give you a little better rock clearance and slightly crisper shifting.
Oh and yes you would have to change your shifter to run a SRAM derailuer. |

koo.. thanks for the tips & advice....
since i do go uphill (i try not to but it happens) as well as downhill with this bike i'll stay away from the road stuff for now..... i'll put the chain guide on and see how i like it... if i dont.. then a SRAM setup might be in order... Thanks guys |

u run a long cage for long travel bikes cause some ders. cant handle the long throw.you can tear them off when your bike goes throo the travel.the chain guide shood do it tho, maybe take out 2-4 links from the chain and ride it before you spend the doe on the derailuer.
