Default chain size

My commuter bike is 21 speed. Three chainrings and seven sprockets. So, I assume that means I need a 7 speed chain. But, all I see are 8, 9, and 10 speed chains. What do I do? Will the 8 speed chain work?

An 8-speed chain should be fine, I'd think. The only difference would be the width of the chain; an 8-speed chain being narrower than a 7-speed.

8-speed chain should be fine. 7 and 8 are interchangeable. Cheap too.

I believe 7 and 8 speed chains are the exact same. They didn't need to change the width of the chain until they went to the 9 cog cassette.
