Question Going Disc- Wheelset suggestions????

Okay, after seeing $300 on a set of Juicy 7 Disc Brakes I am nearing the plunge. I'm not a mother hucker, just CC with the typical rocky single track stuff. Tubeless is really no big interest but I'll do it if it's necessary. Tricky part is that I am a 210 lb. horse ! All legs and beer belly ...lol

SO... here's my questions to those of you that are all knowing...
 1. What wheelset should I go for?
 2. Should I have a set built?
 3. Can I do something cost effective around $350 for the set?
 4. Crossmax Crossland comments?
 5. Are the Shimano XT hubs 6 bolt?
Obvious, I am a little clueless on brand, cost vs. effectiveness, etc. Help me out and please forgo the jokes on this if you can. I just need the straight stuff...no B.S. THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I"m about the same size as you. I picked up a set of Xt 6 bolt hubs laced to Mavic 717 rims for under $300 about a year ago at Supergo (now Performance) Used Stans and I've had no problems at all.

You should be able to get a set of handbuilt XT hub/DT 4.1 or 5.1 for that price. You can get 6 bolt XT's. If you find a good deal on center lock hubs, adaptors are available.

I think you can do better than $300 for a decent set of hydro's.

If you want to go the Shimano route (xt brakes) , these are a good deal.

picked up a set of these probably 2 or 3 years ago and I've no complaints - I probably paid closer to $250 at the time...

Thanks Matt. I hopefully will have them installed this week. I'm going to try to do it myself. First time for everything. Did you do your own? I guess RTFB

Later.

I installed the brakes myself, nothing to that. A buddy helped me shorten the lines though...

Did you get the round rotors the wavy ones?

Super easy install. Just follow the directions and you can't really go wrong. The only tip I'd give is to bias the initial pad adjustment so that the rotor is running a little more towards the outside than they show on the diagram before you tighten down the CPS bolts.

As far as cuting cables, if you have to cut housings, it depends on which type, but if they are spiral wound single wire casings, a good solid pair of linemans pliers will work. If they are the braided casings, a cutoff wheel on a dremel or a 4" grinder will work great.

I've got Avids on my rig and I'm totaly happy with em.

I got my set-up completed last night. I am experiencing a few concerns though and you all hopefully can tell me what to do. No, I am not setting around "pulling my toob" in the garage. I am getting frustrated though . I have followed all the instructions and while it's on the bike stand the brakes spin fine with no rub. I get my ass on the bike and then the front brake rubs slightly eventhough I am not touching the brake lever and it rubs more so on turns. I have tried the re-alignment twice with little improvement.

Also, the brake levers feel squeshy. I did RTFB thoroughly. The instructions say that eventually some braking noise will go away and the brakes may tighten up. Do I need to bleed them or wait?

Please help!!!

Hm, that sounds wierd. I've never had a problem adjusting my brakes and I've done it twice for front and rear. Here's a sniplet of advice that I followed and worked out well. BTW, do you have the new model or the '05 juicy 7's? The new one has the two piece lever clamp, the '05 has the one piece lever clamp (have to remove grip to install).

The second setup issue. When you go to tighten down the loose cone and ball parts, spin the wheel VERY slowly WITH THE CRANKS --- NOT BY ROTATING THE WHEEL BACKWARDS. Slowly apply a little more force to the lever and very gently stop the wheel rotating, making sure you used the cranks for this! This slow rotation of the wheel/rotor in the correct direction the wheel naturally travels helps wiggle out the spaces in the ball and cones and align the parts correctly. Don't go too fast. While keeping the lever moderately engaged, go to each of the two bolts and tighten one a little, then the other and so on back and forth. It's kinda like the early XT linear V-brakes and the toe-in issues regarding squealing. Fractions of a millimeter make all the difference.

Get this...I ordered the '05 models from pricepoint and they shipped me the new '06 models, which are $30 more each. I went on today and they are no longer offering the deal...I guess they sold out?

I got the adjustment figured out. I had to eyeball it closely and lined them up the instructions say to hold down the lever and tighten the CPS bolts which didn't work too well since one pad was too close to the roter and then with my weight put pressure on the fork. I gotta loose some weight...lol. So I eye balled and they work great. Ready to ride.

This advice saved my day.

Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!
