Default V Brake Help!!

I had to replace the pads on my rear brake. There is too much "play" on the lever. I know about turning out the barrel screw, but this there a way to pull slack out of the cable? I don't want to screw out the barell when the pads are brand new, b/c what will I do when the pads wear a little???

thanks

Jesse

It's been awhile, but if I remember correctly, you should be able to take out the slack on your brake cable where it attaches to the brakes. I would set the barrels on the levers about mid-way to allow for adjustment later on, trailside or otherwise. I think you should be tinkering with the adjustment screws and placement of the pad for each brake to fine tune.

Check Park Tools online, they have lots of good pics and instructions for such things. Just be sure the pad doesn't rub against the tire or it will eat through it immediately and totally ruin your tire...I made that mistake once!

pull the slack out : squeeze the top of the v-brakes (hold) : losen barrel screw : pull cable with pliers (look at the brakes so you know how much cable your pulling): tighten barrel screw... that should pull the slack out.
