Default SS Chain

I have a gary fisher rig and recently replaced the factory chain as it was stretched a full half link. I didnt measure the width of what came off of it(gone in the trash already) and replaced it with a 1/8" ss chain PC-1. Other then the crappy master on the PC1 it seem to fit without issue. I notice on intense climbs the chain would make a weird noise that would scare me off the bike since a broken chain would destroy me at that kind of force. Other then intense cranking on the pedals the chain seems perfect. I see some marks on the bash guard that look like the chain may be intermittently be rubbing it (like on intense climbs).

Any chance the Rig isnt supposed to use a SS 1/8" chain?

Any chain recomendations for pure strength? Anywhere I can find tensile strength data on various chains?

I bought a KMC just in case the PC1 doesnt live. What do you mean by bend instead of break?

The regular side plates are notoriously fragile in tensile strength, so when damaged they tend to fail unexpectedly (like when standing to crank). The double thick plates on mine could stand being ground down and/or folded over to the point that links would only bend in one direction. But this was due to aggressive BMX street riding, still I had a hell of a time busting the 410H. Whatever you do remember that the "Z" Chain is a flimsy piece that will fail when you least expect it.

Some ss chains do rub on the bashgraurd because they are wider than standard chains. You could try spacing the bashring out with some washers or not run a bash. I've done both of these options on my hardtail.

I should have read more closely it sounds like the chain is too wide but it will still work. You can be sure by checking the teeth, if they are 1/8ths than a 3/32 chain will not fit.

Looks like I got the wrong chain. I assumed single speeds were 1/8", my bike is 3/32. I will also return the Z chain.

I took the bashgaurd off and no more noise but since I know I have the wrong chain on...I will get a new one.
