    Default disc-o-mount?

Last night I was all set to convert my Trek 8500 (c. 2000) from rear v-brakes to disc so I can run 700c wheels for commuting. I pulled off the v's and the posts and even had to dislodge a stubborn housing cap from the frame. I go to mount the BB7 caliper and the mounting points on the frame are in the wrong place. I spent about five minutes trying to figure out if the Port Brewing 2nd anniversary ale I'd had earlier was hampering my abilities, but unfortunately (or forturnately?) it was not. I scann the web a bit last night, but to no avail. This morning after a little more effort, I found that I need an apparently hard to come by

    disc-o-mount adapter

Anyone know where I can get one of these. Hayes is supposed to make a similar adapter, but I don't know if it works on a Trek frame. I'm going to call Trek in Vista in a couple of hours, but I'd really like to be able to get the bike together tonight, so I don't have to drive to work again tomorrow.

Are you sure it's a disc mount and not for a rack?

Post pics of the rear mounts on the frame. Is it a Hayes 22 mm mount?

As DISCO asked, are you sure it's not rack mounts?
    - Speed has never killed anyone, suddenly becoming stationary... that's what gets you.
    - May the air be filled with tires!
    - Know your size.

Disco brings up a good question. Also, pictures would help. I am guessing your Trek may not have tabs for disc brakes and you might be hosed. Any reason you want to run 700c wheels? I would just run the v-brakes and slicks at 50psi to commute.

Yeah or just swap the fork and go disc on the front...

Yes. it really exists. No, they are not rack mounting points. I want to run 700c's for more gear inches on the road at 44x11 (1.25" slicks on 26" rims are effectively 24" wheels).

Seems like they might also be called 22mm direct mount.

Been there...Switchback Cyclery in Orange was able to order one for me. Jax in Fullerton, a Trek dealer, had no idea what I was talking about

That's what I was worried about. If the local Trek store can't get it, I'll call Switchback and the Path.

I was unclear... it's the rear brakes I'm converting. I've already gone disc on the front.

I encountered the same issue on a 2001 Gary Fisher. I recently emailed Fisher hoping they could help me out with the part number. They told me to take it to the local dealer which I haven't done yet...I'm just surprised they couldn't tell me the part number for the brake disc adapter but they could could give me the part number for a 1990 Fisher (1 1/4" to 1 1/8" headset adapter) .

I know the piece you're looking for, they are specific to Trek and Fisher. I have one on my Trek tandem. I got mine from Jenson some time ago. What do you call it? Hell, I don't know. But if you need to see what it looks like, let me know and I'll send you a picture.

    Edit: nevermind, someone's done that.

Cambria has them listed as in stock. A buddy of mine had to get one for an older OCLV hardtail, worked fine.

    Looks like they're $37, ouch.

Not sure if they link will work, you can search by part number if needed.

Cool, good to know I've got options that don't involve driving 120 miles round trip (with the price of gas, that $37 is looking positively reasonable).

The mechanic at Trek's Vista store didn't really know what I was talking about, but said he had several adapters that might work. I'll take the pix over there at lunch and see if they can match it.

Big Rick, thanks for keeping us updated. I have a buddy with a Trek that I think would like to do the same conversion on his older hardtail from about the same model year as your bike. I didn't think anything would work until I read this thread. I'd certainly appreciate knowing the outcome and what you ordered, etc. if you don't mind following up.

I'm doing this for a friend. I sent an email to the San Diego Trek store addy, and the guy said the part number is 210648. It's about 16 bucks. He said they don't keep them in stock, but they can order them...
