Default For you clipless guys...

What do you guys do with the extra length of screw coming out into the shoe? The liner seems to hide it well but I have a feeling after a couple of rides the liner will be destroyed. My pedals came with stickers to place over the screws but it doesn't look like it'll help. Any tips/tricks for a first timer in clipless?

Uh, get shorter screws. They shouldn't stick up past the inside of the sole.

I used the same pair of Answer SPD shoes for 10 years & never had an issue with the screws wearing away at the insert. I guess it would depend on the shoe however. I get the skater type shoes with thick inserts.

I'm sure you could fine a similar but shorter screw; how ever your set should come with screws that fit just fine.

Same question as Dirty.

Ever since I switched to Mallets I have noticed a lot of the cleats/pedals seem to come with longer screws then does with the Shimano. I thought it was just the shoes since I had just switched to a new pair but found they were to long for a few different makes of shoes.

Grind 'em down - takes about 1min

If you have thick soles on yer shoes you could add a spacer/shim under the cleat

Go to the hardware store and buy shorter screws

Grin and bear it is the easiest way.

EDIT: I just took a look in the CB box and it appears they come with TWO (2) sets of screws, one set longer then the other.

LOL!!! Thanks for the responses!! I guess i'll just get shorter screws. The screw is more than 1/2 an inch long and it seems like half of the screw is sticking out into the sole so I don't think washers will help. I don't have a grinder, just my hand-holding-the-screw-to-the-sidewalk grinder.

BTW, I have SPD cleats/pedals.

The screws (Shimano) in my cleat set are 7mm long (the threaded part). So someone included the wrong kind of screws when you bought the cleats.

Just got back from Peformance Bike and LBS and they don't carry the shorter screw, unless I want to buy new cleats. Plan B: Grinding it down.

My Quick Fix: My shoes came with these phillips screws to secure a cover over the mounting area and those are short enough. I didn't realize I had those but they fit good. I will go to the hardware store and find some replacement ones. Thanks for the help guys! I really appreciate all of your help.

Most pedals will come with two size length screws just use the shorter ones or see your LBS, I'm sure they will kick something down for free, or; I know crank brothers carries the two sizes maybe someone can share their unused screws.

are you sure you arent using toe cleat screws? I know my shoes came with 2 screws and 2 hole(Pairs) the longer screws were for a toe cleat of some sort and the shorter ones were for the sbd cleat.

The longer screws are to help keep your foot from sliding around in the shoe....
