Default What is the deal on high volume air canisters?

What does a high volume air can do for you in terms of performance?

My voodoo canzo 29 is a sick bike, but the monarch 4.2 isnt the best (still playing with it). At 20 or 30% sag, with gate all the way +, and gate ON, it still bobs a tad.

i remember hearing that bigger guys tend to hate the monarch.

The previous year frame used the MC 3.3 which has Off-Gate-Lock functions vs just off and Gate. It also has a bigger body.......

so.... i may take apart this monarch, and see if i can put the available high volume canister on it if it will help me...
OR
swap the oil to something a tad heavier to slow the compression down a tad
OR
just buy an RP23 and call it a day LOL

The higher the volume, the more linear the feel is, IE theloser to a spring feel.. You can run lkess sag, and still use all your suspension. Less spiking, better fell ETC

EDIT, look at the push site, they sell an oversized canister for the rp23. If you likw that shock now, try it with the bigger air can!!!!!

I've had the rp23 for a year or so. I just sold the bike it was on and I have to say given the choice I would go with the triad. The rp23 never seemed to stiffen up. I hear there's a newer version that gets closer to lock out, but I have yet to try it.

I thought the high volume air canister made the Suspension travel more progressive?

It's the other way Brandon. Imagine the volume in a small canister versus the volume in a large canister. The shaft moves the same amount, however, one has more air to compress, and one has less. The one with less air to compress will ramp up in air pressure a lot higher than the air pressure in the high volume canister.

I JUST switched the can to the high volume on my rp23... HUGE diff in plushness... reminded me why I liked an old bike with a big can rp3 so much.

big cans rock!!!!

Depends on the suspension design. On a high leverage ratio bike like the Reign, the high volume canister on the factory RP3 was plush, but had no midrange support and would blow through the travel even on a curb. If I upped the pressure, I would lose all small bump sensitivity. By swapping air canisters to a small volume canister, I got the midrange support I needed without sacrificing small bump sensitivity and plushness.

Same here.Had Push put on a high volume cannister on my RP23 when I sent it in to be serviced.Huge difference, and I couldn't be happier. Have it mounted on my 5.5- Lloyd

That deosnt sound right, with the hi volume can, your supposed to run higher pressure, which gives you all the support you need, but because it doesnt ramp up as fast, your not sacrificingyour small bump compliance. SHouldnt matter what bike its on.

well, that was my experience as well as many others on the mtbr forums on the reign equipped with the high volume canister. even push recommends that you use the low volume air canister on the reign.

so a high volume (which apparently isnt available on the 6.5" monarch) wouldnt help with bob issues... but would make it plusher.

I may take the bitch apart, use some thicker oil to slow it down a little.

can you throw the gate adjustment all the way so it pretty much locks the shock when its in the gate postion

No the hi volume should be good for a bigger guy, with a hi volume canister, you eliminate the ramping up, or at least slow it down. but you can run the air pressure so its stiffer, without over ramping throughout the compression. Might try the thicker oil too.
