The answer is no, you should not be able to pull your crank off with out a puller. Just go to performance, they have cheap pullers.

OK, I assume you have a flat taper and not an ISIS BB. In a pinch, sometimes you can loosen the bolts, then do some hard pedal strokes on each side to remove the cranks. Sometimes, they may pop off within a couple strokes. This can be dangerous, so be careful. Also, be careful when it does come loose so you don't damage the taper in the crank arm. Yes, this is a hack method.

But it's really best to use a puller.

then replace the cranks bolts with self extracting crank bolts.

A Puller is best, Self extracting bolts are next best, but if your realy skills, a couple small rattles of a hammer will pop them loose as well.

you can use an automotive style gear puller if you have it available at least on the drive side

It's not that hard, just use a 14mm on the bolt, put your feet on the frame and work it side to side till it comes loose.

A crank arm is the only way to remove the crank and be sure that you won't round off the square-taper interface inside the crank arm. Riding it without the retention bolts is the worse thing you can do, as it would certainly ruin the crank arm. It only takes a small amount of rounding of the soft aluminum crank by the cromoly spindle to start a vicious cycle of the crank coming loose and having to torque it further up the spindle until you are buying a new crank arm, not to mention the frustration with your crank arm coming loose and your chainline constantly needing adjustment, sometimes mid-ride.

Buy/borrow a crank-puller, it's cheaper than replacing your crank arm.

Sometimes a rubber dead blow hammer will do the trick and it shouldn't damage the crank. Just tap the edges and should vibrate it loose. If that doesn't work I have the removal tool. I will be happy too remove them for ya.
