Default Your Ideas On Saint Group

I have been thinking about Saint cranks, hubs, Der. and like to get your opinion as an end user and not as a shop who is trying to sell the item.

Does anyone of you currently running them? And how do you like them.

Is it true that you have to have Saint hubs to run Saint rear der. and Saint rotors? Can you use Saint rotors and run a different caliper / lever system?

How do you compare Hone Vs the Saint?

I would appriciate your input on this subject.

Thanks,

Ali

Roger runs the Saint cranks on his DH bike and loves them. He is waiting for the new model to come out and will be putting it on his M6.

love my cranks and front derailer, you have to have hubs to run the derailer so ive never ran it, the hubs are centerlock so you need them if you run the centerlock rotors I know shim, sells both 6 bolt and centerlocks so you can prob get either,

The wheelsets that I have already priced with Saint hubs, need Shimano Saint center lock. Now the question is that do I have to go with Saint calipers or can I use some other brake systems ( Caliper and levers ) to go with the Saint. I basically mean that do they line up with each other if they are different brands?

Thanks

Saint cranks and brakes are awesome, there is nothing bad to say about them, the cranks are actually my favorite set on the market. The hubs are complete crap, they are loose ball and have to use centerlock rotors. The older rear derailers were bombproof but heavy and a pain to adjust. The new ones that arent out yet look really promising and I want one. The new saint brakes[the 4 piston ones] also look really nice and I plan on picking up a set once they come out.

Saint brakes are great and shimano definately sells 6 bolt rotors for them, so you don't have to use centerlock rotors. The brakes are really powerful and have great modulation. Also they are super easy to work on.

Ali,
Yes, you can use saint rotors with other brake systems. I have use them with Hope Mono6Ti brakes and they seem to work better than the Hope rotors did.

I could be wrong, but I don't think those will work. My understanding is that Saint hubs use an oversized centerlock and have no adapters for it. If I recall correctly if you have Saint hubs then you must use Saint centerlock rotors. Even Shimano XT/XTR rotors will not work on them.

I ran Saint cranks for about 2 years and while I never had a problem with them I am just as happy with my 2008 XT's and they weigh about 400gms less. I still have my Saint's and will be running them on my 1x9 Chameleon. I just don't feel they are necessary. As far as the rest of the group I would only run the brakes and I would use Shimano's 6-bolt rotors. I would not use the hubs/shifter/derailleurs. I have found the Hope Pro II's are great and easy to service and I am completely sold on SRAM's X.9 drivetrain. As soon as I switched from XT to X.9 I felt that it was something I should have done way sooner. Later.

Thats what I have heard. The Saint rotors are a bit bigger than XT and XTR, and there is no adaptor made for it so far.

Thanks

I've been running a package on my DHR for about three years. Hubs, brakes and cranks. Only thing missing is the rear hub as they didn't make a 20mm thru at the time.
I can say only one thing. No issues whatsoever. Nothing. Brake pads and that's it. OK that was a few things I guess....

Hope that helps,

Mott

I liked the saint cranks and ran them with 2 rings and a bash. The only downside is not the weight but the black finish which rubs off quite easily. I wound up going to the 08 XT for this reason but hardly noticed the difference in weight with the same level of stiffness.

The new Saint and SLX cranks differ from XT with a reenforced spider and stouter (thicker walled) arms. As an added bonus the new saint has some bling gold BB shells.

To answer your question there is not much difference with the hone stuff the deciding factor for me was the Saint was (at the time) the most friendly set for ankle gouging. If you run clipless you may not worry about any of this but thats my two cents.

I love the cranks, even though I've only ridden them a little so far. Sure they're heavy, but I have the confidence that I will not be able to break them, and I don't notice the weight anyway. They are slightly stiffer than XTs, but not noticeable for most people prolly.

Not sure on everything else. The 2009 saint brakes promise to be quite sweet, since they are returning to the 4-pot design. Should be awesome.

The Saint horizontal dropout derailleurs are made for bikes with horizontal dropouts. Like if you had a singlespeed with horizontal dropouts (Surly, Redline, etc), you could potentially run one of these.

If you're looking to use this on a MTB, you probably need the vertical one.

The difference between the two is just where a little tab is positioned, so that the derailleur sits at the correct angle.

I was just trying to figure it out, since the photos seem to be the same. I figured there had to be a difference but since that was the first time I had seem that was odd. Do a lot of DH bikes have have horizontal dropouts?
