Exclamation tire tread wear

how can you tell when you need to replace a tire's tread? can you just switch the back to the front to solve this, or should I use new treads? How long can you use a tread before you should replace it?

With basically every bike and every rider the rear tire will go first, I run my rear until it has almost no center tread left and I usually replace both front and rear at the same time, then in an emergency I have my somewhat used front as a back-up in the garage. If you want to swap them then go right ahead. There are a lot of variables to how long you can run a tire; rider weight, tire pressure, tire rubber durometer(hardness), rider weight distribution.

I have really started liking Kenda Nevegal's and I inadvertently learned a trick to make your tires wear at relatively the same pace and give you more traction up front. I run a DTC(Dual tread Compound) in the rear and a Stick-E up front.

I use the same front and rear so that when the rear wears and starts slipping on climbs, I put the old front on the rear and then buy a new tire for the front.

Don't put the used rear on the front: I did that once and it made cornering very exciting.

Personally I run my front tires for... well about forever. Front tires dont wear at all close to as fast as a rear, As far as the rear, I pretty much run them untill I damage the sidewall, or they have become a semi slick.

It depends where I am riding. Around the OC it does not bother me to run wore out tires. But with trails that are loose with extreme exposures I want tires that still have that sharp cutting edge on the knobs. Tires are cheap insurance.
