I ♥ the Glory Hole
|
Was riding at Big Bear yesterday and all of a sudden my rear wheel feels wobly for a second and then it locks up.
I'm thinking "WTF was that?" I get off my bike and I look down and see this. ![]() ![]() I can't believe I actually broke the thing. Praise be to Allah/Jesus/Buddah/Confucious/Zeus that the frame is still under warranty. Woo! My first broken frame. For some strange reason I'm kinda stoked that I actually rode hard enough to break a frame....or maybe it was just a weak weld. Probably the weld. |

Nice one!! ![]() Contact your local dealer. If you didn't destroy the wheel, and/or blow the shock in the process, it'll likely be covered. You could also look at adding the D.O.P.E. system. |

![]() If Kona is like they used to be they have a good warranty. I had a '99 Stinky that broke after 4yrs and they replaced it with the current model frame but I did have to pay out 150 for the newer shock because the shocks were not compatible between '99 and '04.

I experienced the exact same break on a Transition Preston FR after 14 months of riding. IMHO, it's the cumulative effect of hucks (mine are usually 3'-5' to flat, 8'-10' to transition), exacerbated by the stress of the braking forces.
My chainstay was totally severed and when I pushed the bike forward and applied the brake, the pivot would be pulled down. That's when I realized how much stress that chainstay weld absorbs - thus mtbfred's advice to get a floating brake may help. Your warranty argument will certainly be helped by the fact that it failed at the weld. Also note whether the crack goes through the jig hole. |

I'm betting the failure was mostly as a result of braking forces.

Glad you're okay. Do you have a spare bike to ride until you get the Stinky replaced? Good luck with the warranty, hopefully you can upgrade!!!

Nice job. At least it broke when you were just toodling along. I can't imagine how much trouble that would have been if it had broken while we were flying down the fire road 2 minutes earlier
Coulda been messy ![]() BTW, nice meeting you and chuck, it was a fun ride while it lasted. Lemme know when you're going back up there, perhaps I'll come. Good luck getting the new frame etc. ![]() |
