Once your setscrew-type platform pins get worn, packed w/mud, or dinged by rocks, they can be a real pain to get out. Even the ones inserted from the bottom can get the allen head mud-packed. I wasn't having any luck on some of 'em, even with soaking in Silikroil (like Liquid Wrench but way better) and using a standard Ezy-Out ("spiral screw extractor"). But then I found this type of screw extractor at Sears. It works great! One end has a hardened cutter, then flip it over and use the extractor. The second-smallest fits 8-32 screws. I don't think you can buy them separately. Part 52155, set of 4 was $30.

The vice grips worked great for twisting off the screws. The setscrews were black oxide in magnesium pedals. Maybe the mag seizes worse than aluminum. (people say to use loctite to prevent loosening -- never had them loosen -- maybe anti-seize instead would be advisable in magnesium).
Now that's a very interesting idea, but I think sounds like more work: putting it in, might make them slightly more slippery, and takes time to dig out. The Sears tool spun them right out. Only the ones sheared off by rocks or vice grips needed drilling by the cutter end first. Had 'em all out in a few minutes. Last edited by OldDogDan; 06-24-2008 at 10:56 PM.
