![]() I'm just curious because I'm doing my car soon and I realized that a MTB disc is pretty much the same as a car. On my car the pads are metallic and have eaten away the rotors, but I stop really good! Just curious.

With my Avid BB5's, it seemed like every 250 miles. That was crazy, so I started trying different pads, put on a BB7 up front, stuff like that.
My new ride has XTR brakes, 800+ miles and I haven't changed pads yet. That makes me happy! As for how many times a year, that will depend on a lot of variables. I've heard it said that pads wear faster in winter...

dh bike probably twice a year but I run soft pads so they wear fast but I get more power.
dj bike never, if they wear out I just take off the brakes and ride brakeless until I find another caliper with pads that still have life |

About 2-3x/year.
If your car needs pads this often, something is wrong!

I use pads that are most often used for track cars (road coarse). The life of the pads/rotors doesn't bother me because I like to stop/slow down as deep into the turn as possible. I know people that get 3 track days out of one set of pads. I personally went through one set in 7 hours of track time...

Well, a hybrid street/track pad would be your best choice...Mintex C-Tech, Hawk HP+, etc. I have not had good luck with EBC personally.
I use Hawks and I am happy with them. You should be able to get a year of street driving, easy.

You’re supposed to change them? How do you do that?
This mountain biking just gets more and more complicated! |

Using Hawk HP+ and I have about a year of street driving and a few track days on them. However I was curious just on the mountain bikes.

I'm pretty sure I'll go through 4 sets in the first year I own the bike. Seems to last about 5 or 600 miles for me, with a lot of riding in the steep San Gabes, plus my weight doesn't help either. I think Formula has the smallest brake pads going out there, I'd like to see a lot more meat on them.
