The free hub body of my Hope Pro II rear hub has been gouged by the cassette. This makes it very hard to take off or put on a cassette. I am not happy about this.
Has this happened to anyone else? Is this normal? I am thinking it should be a warranty claim or something. This never happened on my DT Swiss hubs, Shimano Deore hubs or cheapo Novatec hubs. Why such a soft material for the free hub body? ![]() ![]() ![]()

were you using a sram cassette? Sram cassettes tend to gouge freehub bodies easily because they dont fit as tight

Yes it was a SRAM cassette but I have run those on all of my hubs. This is the first issue I have had so I don't blame the cassette.

It's a relatively large interface so it wouldn't make much difference to use aluminum especially when it saves a considerable amount of weight. Personally I don't mind a little extra if the components are tough as hell. As long as the inside of the free hub is not gouged it should be fine, besides how often does the cluster need to come off anyway?.

Word, nothing like Atomlab's six pawl driver. Still though we are missing a lot of cold beer at the poker ride in El Moro.

thats standard from what I was told. Mine looks like that. I rathcet the cassette back with a chain whip so its out of the groove and then it slides off. I am not happy with it either but I think so long as its a billet piece of aluminum its going to do that with us bigger guys.

![]() Yeah, I guess we big guys need big boy hubs. I know that for next time I buy wheels. I tried ratcheting it back but that didn't seem to work well.

Thats pretty regular for an aluminum freehub body. I'm sure they sell a steel body that won't do that but is significantly heavier

The freehubs from hope are designed for lightness, and are meant to be used with a high quality cassette (Sram990 or Shimano XT, XTR) or other cassette with a carrier. It looks like you were using a Sram 950 and no it isn't a warranty issue. You can file down the high spots to make it easier to install/remove the cassette

Yeah, I was using a 950 or 970 cassette, I can't remember. I have a 990 cassette on their now with the carrier. I guess next time I take the cassette off I will break out the file to smooth out the high spots. Now I know!
Chris, can you guys order just a new free hub body for me? Any idea how much $$?

watch out for that pole!

I feared this would happen to my hope hubs on my SS, thankfully not (yet).
I like how White Industries has a titanium free hub option. (have those on my gearie) Those hubs have been great. |

Hey Brew, just call up HopeUSA:1-936-756-5004. Tell'em the deal and they will help you out. I cracked my freehub body and they sent me a new one and a full bearing set no questions asked. They said they had steel freehub bodies available. Later. 936 756 5004

This is normal for an aluminum freehub body. I have seen this same thing on American Classic, Hadley, and King freehubs. At least you can still take off your cassette. I once had to remove a cassette after it had been on the freehub for over 3000 miles. It was nearly impossible to remove due to how far it gouged its way onto the freehub body. It is not a defect or design flaw.

davidb, no permanent problem other than I have to take off the free hub body to remove the cassette. it's really easy so no big deal, but I'd rather not have to. HOPEfully they will send me a new one. ![]()
