Electrical Tape for Rim Tape

Didn't have any rim tape so I used electrical tape the other day - anyone do this before? Will this hold up or should I get the right stuff on there?

What do you guys think of the tubless conversion stuff??

Electric tape does not last. Over a few weeks, the tube's pressure will cause the tape to stretch around the holes in the rims, and the tube will rupture. I've also been in a pinch and done that with two wraps, and the tube ruptured soon after.

The best cheap solution is reinforced strapping tape.

No such thing as a "cheap solution." You always pay one way or the other. Besides you don't want to be out on your ride wondering if your ghetto tape job is holding up. Just by the proper rim strip.

Electrical tape can move around easily and leave 'gunk' behind. I'd get it out of there. $3 for some Velox and you're good to go for quite a while. I also use the Specialized rim strips that are a thinner plastic loop that you have to stretch a bit to get onto the rim and have no problems with them either.

Some swear by packing or strapping tape.

Electrical and duct tape... not as good long term, but will work temporarily if you have to use something.

I have used electical tape for years........works fine if that is all you have.

Now I use the Blue tape I got from The Path or Stan's Yellow tape.

what stuff would be best to replace Stan's Yellow tape for tubeless setups? I don't feel like ordering a $10 roll + shipping from them

planning on putting non-tubeless tires on a set of their tubeless rims

The Path uses this Blue tape that works good.....give them a call

If your gonna use electrical tape dont use the cheap stuff. The cheap stuff doesnt hold up and will leave a sticky mess.

Use The Scotch Super 33+, its sold individually in its own case. It wont leave the mess behind and its more durable.

I always use electrical tape (several layers) on my non-ust wheels. I've never had any issues and it stays put unlike that crap velo rim tape or whatever that canvas stuff is.

I've always done this when i build up MX wheels too and is a quite commonly done thing.

i've used the reinforced packing tape and gorilla tape with little success. the only thing that has worked for me is velox.

or you can try these boogers...velo plugs!


my experience with non ust wheels with ust tires has been good. for example, i mounted a new crossmark lust today in about 5 minutes. the thing sealed perfect on the first shot...i was amazed. i had the non ust maxxis crossmarks on before which definitely required a little more attention.

Plenty of local shops sell Stan's yellow tape. I bought a roll and 2 valve stems for something like $15 at Adrenaline. That one roll is enough to do 3 or 4 rims.

To the note of using Vinyl<electrical>tape, you will be fine, just so long as you dont stretch the tape as you put it on, and you use about 3 layers.


Best stuff you can use is. 1, any cloth tape, Velo makes a good product, or you can even use cloth bandage tape, it just doesnt come with a hole for the valve already in... 2, 3m strapping tape. thats what comes with the stans kits and it works great with two layers, and it plenty sticky enough to never move.
