Default Stem Torque

I need to straighten my bars from a crash over the weekend and wanted to check the bolts making sure they were tight. There are no torque settings on the stem. How tight should I tighten them. Its the one that came with the bike and is unmarked. Its on a Giant STP DJ bike.

You should be fine anywhere in the range of 7-9NM.

Not sure about how much "NM" as Toga had recommended, since I don't have stuff with me. I've had Thomson and Specialized stems and they both read 40 lbs. of torque.

Thomson stems called for 48 in/lbs and some others (Sunline/FSA) say 60 in/lbs.

Make sure you don't confuse in/lbs with ft/lbs!

a good torque wrench should have markings in both increments, but this online torque converter is useful:

That is true, but most ft/lb torque wrenches don't go below 10 ft/lbs (at least the clicker ones I have do not), so in most cases with bicycle bolts, you'll need an in/lb specific one.

Oops - thought you were referencing in/lbs vs. ft/lbs
