Your opinion.....Hope or Magura??

Well, time to get rid of my Avid Juicy 7's. Good brakes, however I long for something a bit more trick. So, Hope Mini's, or Magura Marta SL's. Those are the two I have narrowed down to. Any and all feedback much appreciated as allways folks.

They may not be the easiest to set up but they are the best.
look at the M4 also light and really strong.

how about some formulas, you can get those through qbp and not a lot of people run 'em.

Otherwise I'd say get the Hopes, gotta represent my UK roots.

I love Hope brakes but the mini's suck. No power, fade easily on long descents. The Hope M4's are awesome though. Marta's would be nice as well but I doubt would have the power of the M4's.

You will save even more weight with Hopes because you will no longer need a trail bell.

For CC use the mini's rock. It it the only brake I run. My mini's are silent and work fantastic

My recomendation would be Formula One brakes, or if you are going for all out light weight, check out the Formula Ouro line. I would also look at the Avid Ultimate brakes.

If it has to be between Magura and Hope, I would go Hope.

I'm running Hope on my 29r SS & Magura Marta SL on my 26" SS. Both great brakes.
I think the modulation on the Magura's is actually a little nicer, smoother, & more powerful, but they are for sure more "finicky" then the Hope.
I've had a few issues with leaks, setup & etc with the Maguras, but have had no issues with the Hope thus far.

Go with Hope.

When you say trick, are you only talking about looks? What type of riding are you doing with this bike? The J7s may not look trick, but they work very well even for DH applications.

Is serviceability at places other than near home a concern, such as needing replacement parts when on a road trip?

I just love the fact that Hope keeps their brakes from looking too "mass produced." My Avid's work very well, and the Juicy Ultimate barakes are nice, but they do not inspire as much confidence as the Magura's or Hope's I have ridden. I am 6'3 and 260lbs. That is a whole other story. Serviceability is a concern, but I am not too worried about it, considering my occupation.

I agree, the Hope brakes are the sweetest looking brakes of the bunch! And I also agree about the Avids looking mass-produced - a perfect example where quality and performance isn't always top of the heap when there are other options that have that and more.

I know understand your occupation, but unless you carry lots of spare parts on road trips, you may want to think about parts availability at places near Mammoth, GooseBerry Mesa, Sedona, Moab, etc., if you do those kind of trips. I was riding with someone in Sedona who had a line failure with his Formula brakes. He was able to finish the day's riding with little to no rear brakes. The shops in town didn't have any service parts. Fortunately, it was his last day of the trip there; it would have sucked if it was the first day. Stuff fails on trail.

My vote would be to stick with the Avids. I don't want to notice my brakes, and I agree with 2-wheel on the parts availability.

The feel of the Hopes is way better than the Avids. I had Avids on one bike and Hopes on the other. The Avids are a good brake but the Hopes are great.

Sold the Avids and picked-up a set of Hopes

I've ridden bikes with Hopes Mono Minis, 08 XT's and Formula One's and the Formulas were far and away the best feeling and best stopping brakes I've ever used.

Surprisingly, I like the power and feel of the 08 XT more than the Hopes, but they're very pedestrian looking if you're not into that sort of thing.

I have 08 XT's on both my bikes, they are a great value brake.

It was a toss up for me when I picked up my Hopes. When it came down to it the Hopes were just a tad more expensive and now both my bikes use the same brake pads and rotors. That was a huge selling point for me

I have Hopes they STOP!!!, not a fan of the shims thing though, but I'll live with it for that kind of stopping power. I also Keep hearing great things about the XT's as well, those that have them seem to love them.
