Default cutting steere tube, start nut question

once the steerer tube is shortened, do i need to move the start nut further down the steer tube? say if i cut 3/4" on the steer tube, do i need to move the start nut 3/4" lower?

only if its getting to close to the top of the fork like say within 1/4 inch or so

Hey JOJO I just did some work on my bar height yesterday I went down about 1/2 an inch and yes you will need to move the star nut down too

Yes, you will. You can tapp it down gently with the bolt installed and try your best to keep it straight, or have the LBS use the proper tool to put it at the proper depth and perfectly straight!!!

Not a tool that I would say you need at home, seeing how often you wont be installing star nuts.

I just installed one with a short piece of copper tubing and a hammer. It went pretty straight once it was all in there. You might want to have it done if it's cheap enough.

Only if you can't tighten the top cap to preload the bearings. Once the stem is set up you don't need the star nut, etc. though you might feel safer with it. LOL
