While tuning my bike the other day, I noticed that one of my chainring bolts on my Raceface Deus XC crankset was a bit loose. In the process of tightening it and checking the others, I sheered the head off of 2 of the 4 chainring bolts. The bolts sheered under no more than moderate torque. Anyone else experience this with the Deus XC crankset?
This is the 3rd problem that I have had with this crankset, as I had the crank arms replaced under warranty due to them self extracting during rides, and I have had to replace at least two chainrings due to broken teeth. I wrote to the warranty department at Raceface and the rep didn't even address my warranty claim. He just stated that their bolts were made by someone else with their name on them, so I needed to go buy a new set at my LBS, or have my LBS order them from Raceface at my cost. Talk about cheap... I don't imagine that it would cost Raceface more than $4 to mail me 4 new bolts. Anyone know where I can find Raceface chainring bolts, or have any suggestions on a quality, lightweight replacement? Thank you in advance, Eric |

There are all kinds of aftermarket bolts available, almost all are better than the one's that came with the cranks.
I wouldn't order another set of RF bolts.

All my original Race Face bolts from my '05 Deus XC crankset are stripped, MIA, or otherwise borked. Had to replace my middle ring due to catastrophic bolt failure as well.
Race Face chainring bolts are teh suck. I replaced them with plain ol' aluminum bolts. No they are not as light; I did weight them, but I didn't write it down. They where noticeably heavier when I held them in my hand, but I can't tell the difference when pedaling. The plain ol' aluminum ones have a failure rate that's 100% less than the Race Face. |

Thank you everyone for the info so far. If anyone has anything else to add, please do.
Reflux... take your crankset to the bike shop that you bought them from and have them send them in to Raceface for warranty replacement. If you bought the cranks used or as part of a used bike, take them to the bike shop that you normally shop at (assuming they are a Raceface dealer) and maybe they will send them to Raceface for you, even though you didn't buy them there. I don't think Raceface will accept warranty requests from individuals. If you play your cards right, Raceface will probably replace your crank arms with the updated version. Good luck! Eric |

Buy these Truvativ chain ring bolts. They have hex heads on both side which makes them easier to tighten.
You can also get them in pretty colors from Purely Custom.

Ive had the same issue with my Race Face Deus. I sheered the chainring bolts and just replaced them with the standard steel ones. I think the bolts they have on the crank are Al so that might be why it is easy to sheer.
I also have been having issues with the bolt coming loose. I found that by tightening the 10mm extractor cap, the 8mm bolt will not come undone. I think im gonna upgrade to Shimano cranks. I bought a pair of LX cranks for my SS and it is so easy to set up. Just like setting up your headset. Just preload and tighten the bolts. Shimano +1! |
