Default half links on a SS. chain talk

SO i put together my new SS, and to my dismay.. i COULD NOT get it tensioned .

with the EBB pushed all the way toward the rear wheel, i was about 1/8" away from connecting the pin... SO... i had to add 2 links (one male, one female...). With that setup, AND the EBB all the way forward, i couldnt take up all the slack!?!?!

so what chain do you guys run? a full pintle/halflink chain? or do you run JUST ONE half link?

how do you get the half link to match the rest of the chain? (width etc... all chains are different).

any help is much appreciated.... i love the SS!

They make half links for 1/8 BMX chains as well as 3/32 8spd chains.
One is all you need.
Jenson has both as well as a full half link chain(although it will be heavier than a regular chain)

hmm that's weird. you should be able to find a spot in the EBB's rotation that takes up the slack. I have enough in mine that I can run the same chain length on a 32x20 as I can on a 32x18. No half links here, just a SRAM PC58 with a power link. Take your rear wheel out of the drop outs and connect your chain before you loop it over the cog, and then mount the rear wheel.

well if you're going to something smaller than 22t in the rear then you should be ok...i was looking to do a 1/2 link but ended up changing frame LOL

I''ve never had to use a half-link. Go back to your shorter chain and assemble it completely. Take the rear wheel off, place the chain on chainring, put the rear wheel in the drops while the chain is on the cog.

i tried that and it was WAAAY too tight. i know it would work with a 21 tooth.

a half link would have been perfect.

I dont care about weight... i think i might run the full pintle chain and be bullet proof

What's your gearing? It's a Zion 29er, right?

try 21t i think you are more than able to heck i would venture to guess you'd be good at 20t...have you ridden anywhere else other than fully to get a gauge on the gearing?

just a hint OMR runs 34/22 on his 29'er and he climbs all day long

You need to change cogs. You didn't suffer enough yesterday.

The ONLY place at fully i struggled was the first jaunt up the extra credit in blair witch. that initial section... i kept spinning the KLAW! and i got to the point where i stalled for a section... Pulling UP and PUSHING down at the same time.

i think i could do a 21.

I measured the EBB my Zion (Mt. SAC prize). It allows about .4" of adjustment but .5" is needed to cover all gear combos.

The good news is that you can use the shorter chain if you dremel 1/16" off the drops (one-half of your 1/8").

Hey Chew. From what I read there's certain combos that don't work on the Zion frame. It's the EBB. Not enough offset. I think TeamDicky on MTBR replaced his stock EBB with a Phil Wood. He said the PW EBB had more offset than the stock one and probably would allow you to run more gears.

A BMX chain and a half link may work too. But I'd try just going 32:21 gearing.
