2x9 Setup

So i currently have a 1x9 on my 29er and its killing me in my backyard (scully ridge + coal canyon) So i decided I will clutter my bars up and add a front derailer, simple but heres my question. Has anyone ever ran a 2x9 setup with a 38 -22 or something similar I was looking at the white industry setup and may try a 38-22 on my race face cranks since they are brand new. It just seems like 22-32 has alot of overlap and is lacking on the top end

I also like playing around with different gearing. I have found it much easier with Middleburn 5 bolt cranks.

I think you might have a difficult time moving the chain up to the big ring with such a disparity in size.

Chewy told me that front derailleurs can only go up or down by 12 teeth, so the max would be 20-32 or 22-34.

I'm running a 29x42 on my squishy. No lacking on the top end there.
29 is the smallest you can go on the middle ring on a 94bcd 5 bolt

most front derailers can do a 12 tooth difference between rings MAX.

so 20 + 12 = 32, 22 + 12 = 34 etc

which front derailleur are you running? i guess a 13 tooth difference is close enough to 12 to be ok.

hrmm...that 12 teeth thing throws a wrench in the cogs for me...

I was planning on doing something similar on my trailbike. drop the big ring in favor of a bashguard, and run a 36 or 38T middle ring in it's place to help out on the top end. I guess I'd be stuck with a 34T if i keep my 22t granny ring

on my 26" bikes i normally run a 36T middle and 22T granny ring.. no problems shifting at all.. the good thing is a raceface 36T middle ring is easy to find, fits 104 bcd cranks and you don't have to change your cranks/bb

I'm currently running a 22-32 2x9 w/ bash ring on my RIP w/ older 56 BCD cranks and a 11-34T cassette. Rarely to I find myself needing much more than 32 on downhill. I've thought of going 22-34, but even on flat road I can't keep up a continued pace in 32-11 w/ my Rampages. I've also thought of going w/ a shorter 20T granny, but I start to spin out sometimes in 22-34 on technical climbs in loose conditions. I think if I had a 29T, I could almost go 1x9 on my RIP since I'm on the 32 most of the time. But I've never ridden scully ridge & coal canyon, so your situation may be different.

right now Im a 32 up fornt in a 1x9 and I spin down alot of long decents and I wouldnt mind being able to get a few pedals in

nice to know that the 36T will work tkblazer. I think I will try that at some point. Do you happen to have someplace you can find said chainrings for a 4-bolt 104mmBCD? gotta fit my '08 XT cranks.

GP, i think that the way you go down a hill really determines what gearing you want. If you're just cruising with the aid of gravity and not pedaling much, you likely wont spin out a 32T ring. I know i was fine with it until i started cranking down hills to go faster, then i started using my big ring more. Only problem is the 44T is a bit too tall of a gearing, so I can't get the acceleration out of turns that I would like. Switching to a bigger middle ring will give me the higher top-end that I need, but still offer low gears without worry of cross-chaining.

Then go w/ a 36T like tkblazer said and if that doesn't work bump down to a 34T. As a bonus, most bash guards will still protect either size.

XT bottom swing with a ramped ritchey outer ring. I have not noticed any hesitation during shifts.

np, i picked mined up a while back at the path but any bike shop should be able to get you one. i am using the race face rings and like them since they last long and are not too pricey

i run 26 36 on my XC race bike. good gearing IMO.

it is a shimano XT crank BTW
