The 29er gearing question; I don't think you where alone in missing that. A 20 tooth granny on a 29er is pretty much a 22 tooth granny on a 26er. Much easier than putting a 34 cog on a regular cassette. Since 29ers became popular it has gotten much harder finding older compact cranksets.
