Default So...apparently I can't change a tire...

Ok, this is flippin' ridiculous.

I have a Sun wheelset, and IRC Mythos XC (Kevlar) 2.1" tires. The tires do say "To fit HB-575 rim" whatever that means.

The tire is pretty close to impossible to fit on the rim all the way; obviously it's been done before as I was riding on it, but I seriously don't know how.

I replaced a tube and the "tight" section of bead that won't seat on the rim is about 8" long. Niether my standard levers nor my Quickstik are doing any good. I am trying to muscle it on using the "indian burn" method and I'm getting blisters on my hands.

Any pointers?!

soap and water on the tire and the rim usually helps me put on even the toughest tires or new tires.

I have those exact same tires. I had to use two tire levers on my DT540s before. Just sorta inched it along.

Metal levers? Aren't those going to scratch the heck out of the rim?!

Wow. I use those tires frequently w/out that problem. Mavic X517 rims. No air in the tube and pinch them toward the center (as I'm sure you know this) and pull a bit. I actually sit on my hin'ne, bare foot, holding the rim with my toes and pull the tire up and around the rim to get as much slack as possible. Weird. I had a set of Intense 2.25 that I could NOT get on my rims.....

Good luck.....

Make sure all of the air (if any) is out of the tube. Also, try to get the portion of the tire that is on the rim towards the center. I usually pinch the tire together with both hands while wiggling back and forth. And then go back to the portion that is not set and give it one more try. (hope that makes since) A good set of tire levers will help as well. I like PEDROS levers. they are very strong. GOOD LUCK.

Well, apparently, spit is good all sorts of places.

Lubricated the Quikstik and was able to pop it in. You can quote me on that.

Thank you guys!

You're right it could scratch, don't care, it is not like I don't already have bunch of dents and scratches in my rims.

I got something similar to what Dean mentioned. I got Soma tire irons at the Path. Its plastic on the outside and metal on the inside just in case youre worried scratching your rims. FWIW I snapped 2 of those Pedros tire irons trying to mount Maxxis Highrollers on Sun rims.

HB stands for "Hook Bead", we know them as "clinchers". As for the 575, a typical mountain bike rim is about 575 mm in diameter. I know none of this helps you mount a tire, but there it is.

That's ok. The 29 fad will die before I have to replace these tires.

+1 on the two levers

I never have- but have heard of others people using the soap and water technique.

Hope you get it on soon!

2 yellow Pedro's levers. And wear some glasses - I've almost been blinded by little plastic missiles from levers disintegrating.

run a bead of spit on the edge. If you're on the trail have your buddy yell cougar! You'll pop that tire right on.

Yeah, this seems to be an issue with some of the Sun brand rims. I've had similar problems with getting the last part of the bead on my Rhynolite XL and MTX rims. Same tires on Mavic rims are just fine. It's kind of annoying, but now that I know what to expect, I can mentally prepare myself.
