Default Wheel Question: American Classis Single 29

Hi!

So, I have Am Classics SS 29er wheels... my question is, can I throw a 9 speed cartridge on the rear, and then throw some gears on? Or do I need a new hub/wheel? Thanks!

I think you can guess where this is going....(canzo!).

Depending on how wide the freehub body is, you might be able to throw 5 or 6 gears on there. See this thread.

1x1 to 1x5 or 6?

Dude- I grossly underestimated the trails out here. Grossly.

I'm just brainstorming right now... not pulling the trigger on anything yet.

I would think you could tell at a glance. The room for a bunch of gears comes at the expense of dishing the rear wheel more. I doubt they'd do that on a wheel designed for SSing. But if your wheels have room for a casette, I think you could notice how far the spokes are from the qr/nut/whatever-holds-it-on on the drive side.

FYI, my mechanical skills are not so hot.

But, I have about six spacers between my cog and the hub. Maybe I'll post a pic tonight.

The Dude is right. Two different bikes are better than one different bike. The grass may not be greener after all. But options never hurt ($ permitting).

Exactly what I'm looking to do. It's not the SS, its the hardtail that's killing me. SS+FS= Dumb, hence the gears (maybe).

Agreed, but I don't have room for 2x bikes right now. So, I'm thinking I might transfer my parts over to a Canzo for now, keep my rigid carbon fork and SS frame around as a long term project.

Don't know if these are your exact wheels, but some American Classic 29er wheels accept 9sp cassettes.

First option Thudbuster.

Second option, a suspension fork so you can unweight the seat more.

Third option, ride more.

Easy for you to say! Don't you have like 10 bikes?

Pretty sure I saw you riding a Nomad at Noble too .

PS It has a Reba.

Voodoo has the complete 07 Canzo on sale. it comes with geared American Classic wheels (not that I recomend these wheels). Between the bike being on sale at the vendor, and The path having a 29er sale, you could have this complete bike with reba and juicy 7s etc for under 2k.
