Default Brake rub

I have been trying to figure this one out for a few weeks now. It higher speeds I will get a rubbing pinging noise from my brakes(at least i think its the brakes). I am not sure if its the front or the rear. I can duplicate it unless I am riding at high speed, a lot of the time its coasting down hills. Any ideas, or is it something I shouldn't worry about.

I've had that too, and have never been able to figure out why it happens...

Maybe a warped rotor?

If it was warped wouldn't it rub all the time though? I mean I can spin the hell out of it on a rack or upside down and not a single rub.

Could it be rubbing because of lateral forces? So, does it change if you turn left or right?

It's vibration from the rotor. It resonates through the wheels and frame at higher speeds.

So is that normal, or indication of a problem?

I get the very same thing. I was just checking all my brake hardware to make sure there was nothing loose.

If I lightly drag the brake, the sound goes away...but if I spin the tire, it does not rub at all.

It's vibration from the rotor, and I think it's normal. Out of curiosity, what size rotors do you have?

I have 203's, and I noticed only the front vibrates.

My money is on it being the front wheel. As was mentioned, It's probably at least partially vibration induces. Also, if you have a QR front wheel, the lowers/axle/QR interface will flex just a smidge from time to time and cause a zing.

you can tighten the QR a bit to help, but it's not really necessary. also, moving to a smaller rotor may help, but thats not an option for most people

Honestly, If its just zinging periodically (not a constant thing) i wouldn't worry too much. my front brake does it and i dont mind. at least it isn't screeching like mine when they rub

Default same here

weird noise coming from the rotor. only when going fast and/or turning. as long as i'm still able to slow down when i hit the brakes i'm good.

Totally normal noise. Nothing to worry about. Just check the rotor bolts now and then and all the brake mounting bolts. It's worse on some bikes than others. One more good reason to stick with v brakes....LOL

all of the big rotors 203's try to pull thereself straight when you are riding so anytime your bike turns or is at an angle you will get the (shinnk shinnk) sound its perfectaly normal, I dont think the two piece rotors do it as bad or at all

Think GYROSCOPE, you may tilt or turn, but the gyroscope stays straight.

Your rotor is similar to that... it tries to stay in its axis of rotation

If you are staying off the brakes then it could be that your frame (suspension linkage) is flexing causing the rotor to slightly rub.

Yeah this is happening at higher speeds no braking. Its not all the time its comes and goes. Based on the responses it seems like it not something to be overly worried about when it happen here and there, if it gets worse then I will worry.

Brakes Juicy 3 with 8" Hayes front rotors.

i was getting a shrill, annoying vibration whine from my front 185mm Juicy7 and swapped the front and rear rotors and it went away, never to return. Just a suggestion if you are running the same size rotor front and rear. And i saw someone post about creating that grind in a turn, which will generally only happen on QR-axled wheels because the allow more lateral flex.
