If you are referring to the headset cups, no need to wrap the screwdriver. You will be knocking the cups out from the inside so the scratches will only be cosmetic and your frame will not be anodized in there anyhow. Just take your time and alternate sides as you hammer the cups out. The goal is to knock it out evenly to avoid ovalizing the cups or the head tube.

I've done the ghetto method on a road trip when we did not have access to a shop. But with something hi-quality like a King headset, and presumably a nice frame, I would not be trying to save a few $$ by doing it myself unless its an emergency.

No need to worry about the ghetto method. Using the press I built, it is nearly impossible to damage the headset. If you make sure the cups are going in fairly straight you'll splinter the wood before you damage the cups.

I've done the allthread DIY press a couple of times, but I think I buggered up the most recent one. It feels sort of sloppy, like the cups are moving in the headtube a little.

you might have ovalized your head tube if they didn't go straight in. that's why i've been working on a better design that uses bushings to keep it straight.

how much is this DIY press costing to manufacture with materials and all? I think price point has one for 50 bucks..

OK, my $.02. If you're good mechanically, and VERY CAREFUL to start it STRAIGHT, there is no reason you can't DIY. The threaded rod idea should work well. Here's another. I had a really big C clamp hanging around, and that worked great. Start it with careful light taps of hammer on block of wood -- be SURE it's straight, then press it in with blocks of wood and C-clamp. If you're having problems, yeah, stop and go to the LBS.

Just use a dumbbell set! ![]() I actually just went out and bought my own headset press and remover from Price Point. I've used it enough on my own bikes (and friends' bikes) that it's probably more than paid for itself already - especially when you start charging beers to press in headsets. ![]() |

I kind of also wonder if I didn't get them in enough. |

and to make life easier... i put the frame in the sun before i do it... and freeze the cups for an hour or two.
come back from class/ride/whatever and they drop almost all the way in. Hotter than ambient frame = expansion, colder than ambient = shrinkage shrinkage on the small part + expansion on the head tube = trouble free install. a few wacks of the rubber mallet and it is IN ![]()
