Okay, this bike is old. I think I will need a new front ring. My chain rings we those quirky ones that were oblong, not round. They were the latest and greatest performance fad of their time, designed to give you a little more "oomph" on the down stroke.

Anyone remember these things?

When I ride the bike now, my body bounces up and down with the cadence of the front rings.

Don't think I want to be doing that on the SS.

I think I'm going to convert my old HT into a SS as well, will I need to replace my 8 speed chain or remove links to make it work?

You can use the same chain but you'll probably have to take some links out. However, you might just want to get a new chain. Get an cheap 8 speed SRAM chain.

the sram ss chain is cheap. i've heard the others will snap on you and whip your ballz, so i'd go with the ss chain.

This is wrong. 8 speed chains work fine. Just get your chainline straight and you'll be fine.

Actually its the cassette that came with my rockhopper when I bought it in 04. I'm about ready to kick the $hit outta that cassette anyways because it keeps skipping on me when I try to hammer.

Note, you'll need more than one old cassette to get enough spacers probably Jesse.

Default Freewheel or Freehub

For the people converting older bikes the one thing I ran into with mine was that the 7 speed rear hub was a freewheel. You do not need spacers for this. Just run a bmx freewheel cog and you may need to redish the wheel.

That stumpjumper is a surprisingly strong steel frame, has a nice flex, and will climb like nothing else once you get that 6 pounds of old drive train off of there.

32:17 has suited me pretty well for a lot of the so cal trails. Remove the cassette, pick up some spacers and a cheap cog (most every shop has SS parts these days), and pick up a tensioner. Wider tires will help the thing to track a little better too. Only problem is too wide and you'll notice the frame rubs when climbing hard. It is kind of cool though to see how much the steel flexes - I was surprised.

Thanks everyone on this post for getting me out of my secret interweb lurker life... I was so psyched to see another stumpjumper conversion that I had to post. I ride that thing as much as I can now, over any other bike I own. I'll post pics when I get back in town, I'm curious if anyone knows the production year anyway.

Glad to see another lurker come out of the woodwork.

As for my frame its an 04 Aluminum Rockhopper not steel. I bet my drivetrain right now does weight a ton but I still have heavy ass wheels so lightweight hardtail it is not. I'll be running 32:18 so hopefully that ratio will work out if not then
