Spinning my wheels

See if he can stick with it on the 11-32. I HATED the one that I put (yes, intentionally put) onto my Yeti 575 at first. Climbing sucked without another gear to drop into on the steeps. BUT, after the first 3-4 rides, I completely forgot about it.

One other thing I can think of is to make sure his saddle is not dropped when climbing, and that the saddle is adjusted properly so when climbing the nose of the saddle is not too high.
Is the top of the saddle about horizontal? Is the nose up? If the nose is higher than the rear of the saddle then lower the nose to where it is at least level with the rear. I prefer the rear very slightly higher than the nose. If he is having trouble keeping the front wheel on the ground when climbing, he might want to try different stems lengths. |

11-32 represents the number of teeth on the rear cassette or cluster of cogs on the rear wheel. Smallest 11 tooth (high gear) and the largest 32 tooth (low gear).
11-34 cassette has 2 extra teeth on the biggest cog (lowest gear). So it's just a hair easier than a 11-32. Yeti 575. 5.75" of rear travel for the bike I think.

my tip: head to santiago oaks, do a few loops up the first two B's and then down the newly opened single track, then repeat. once that starts to become easy, head down to something like the SJT and ride it until you drop. I imagine it'd work for me if I ever committed to returning to those bit*hes (unless its a double loop I'd usually rather pass).
