Default Chainring Sizes

I was thinking about switching my xt cranks from a triple to a double. I am trying to run close to a 28-38. I'm also going to attempt to run the rings on the outside, but if I have to settle, so be it

Well, you'll run into challenges if you want to run the rings on the outside. The smallest "middle" ring that will fit on the 104 BC "middle" position is 32. Anything smaller and you'll have to run it on the inside.

A popular combination, which isn't far from what you want is a 24 or 26 small ring and a 36 middle ring (or maybe a 3. Shimano is now offering a "touring" XT crank that comes with a 26/36.

Then you can run a bashguard on the outside.

OH thats a tough decision, could I do the Big Red Hill on a 32 ring and a 28 cog. I think 26 might be too small to get the gearing I would prefer. Thanks for the info
