I switched out my shift cables and housing today and I don't know why every time I do it...it is like some sort of epiphany. Whoa....this feels like butter!!
![]() The rippling muscles in my thumbs can now subside back to their normal levels. ![]() The gradual build up of resistance over time has a tendency to fool you. It always takes a complete replacement for me to realize how it is really supposed to feel like. ![]() So do yourself a favor....go out and spend that $30 bucks on new cables and housing!! I just gotta remember to make this some sort of quarterly maintenance.

I don't know if they have any more, but Cambria Bike was selling 16" and 12" sections of the XTR housing for $1 each. Each section came with ferrules too. I stocked up last time. |

The SP-41 housing is the same housing that comes in XTR/Dura-Ace kits. SP-41 is also available by the foot, so you can do full cable runs, if you choose. The difference between SP-40 and SP-41 is that SP-41 comes internally pregreased, so you don't need to lube the cables when you assemble them.

I like the efect when I mix a little Rock N Roll cable magic in with that grease. I think Shimano stainless slick cables and SP41 are the way to go. If there is a section of housing that ends facing up (especially the steep one at the bottom of the seatstay) a housing boot can be good. |
