I am a nube to maintaining my MTB and have a XTR M951 Crankset with 46-34-24 rings and the outer ring have a few missing teeth. As is, it performs fine with only an occasional misfire and was wondering if I can just replace the outer ring or if I need to just buy a new crankset (ouch). If I can just replace the outer ring where do I get the part? Shimano, Ebay, Rock and Road? If I do need to replace the crankset I see some on ebay and was wondering if buying used stuff on ebay is too much of a gamble.

Here's the challenge. The 951 cranks came with a couple chainring configurations: with a one piece chainring and spider (all have the middle ring mounting to it with four bolts - see the photo below) and there was a version that the outer chainring mounts to the spider (with five bolts).
If you have the one-piece chainring, good luck finding one in stock somewhere. Back when they were available, they were $100+. Hopefully you can find one on closeout. The ad where I found this photo, the middle ring is $79! They don't have the big ring. Unless you can find a good one for a good price, you may be better off getting new cranks or a buy a spider (The Path has some) and then a chainring (or rings, if you can only get one in a five bolt pattern). If you have a five bolt removable chainring, your options are wide open to use any aftermarket chainring of the same bolt pattern. This will run you about $40 or so.

Says it's for a 952, but looks just like the one pictured:
