Default The Fat Man Nukes a Rim

I was cruising the local singletrack this morning and heard a strange 'sound'. I thought maybe I had shredded a side knob off of my rear tire. About 100 feet later the tire blew and I came to an easy stop.

Turns out my Mavic XC 717 Disc suffered a fatal failure. I walked out about 2.5 miles before a kind stranger saw fit to come back and give me an unsolicited ride back to the trailhead parking lot

I was running a 2.4" Panaracer Fire FR at about 45psi. Mavic only recommends a 2.1" max tire size, so I guess I was flirting with disaster.

Lucky for me, the LBS had a Mavic EN321 in stock along wih the right size spokes and I was able rebuild the wheel already as I hate to be 'down' for breakdown issues.

Here's some shots

I'm pretty sure it's not supposed to bulge like that.....

Ahh hell Jeff!! A little bit of racers tape, a few zip ties and your rim will be good to go.

If you need to borrow a wheel let me know. I will be down in Fullerton for the morning ride but will be back up here after that.

Never mind saw the pic and posted before reading.

Ouch. You should always bring a spare wheel in your camelbak.

Even if you were running too big a tire a rim should NEVER fail like that. If you run too big a tire it can be dangerous because the bead can roll off the rim but it shouldn't destroy the rim. I'd call mavic and get it warrentied.

Yeah man, it never hurts to give mavic a heads up. if you were using the rim for the intended purpose (i.e. not dhing on it) then they might give you some sympathy. I mean who runs 2.1 tires anymore anyways....

I thought about seeing if they want it just to check it out. I can see cracks developing in several other spots.

Crazy or fast are two labels not applied to my descending skillset .

I guess it doesn't hurt to ask about a warranty.

I built the new wheel up with straight gauge spokes and it built up pretty stiff. Went for a shakedown cruise today and the very first pedal stroke I took, the bike kind of shot forward ccompared to the previous wheel. No pinging or noise. I could feel the extra heft just slightly on the climbs, but I need to have confidence in my wheels. I'm just glad it didn't fail catastrophically and/or way far out on a trail.

I think it's about 2.5 years old.

Is this the angle you're looking for?

This is evident in several places on both sides of the rim.

I wish I had taken a pic of the new build before I gave the new rim a good thrash test yesterday. It passed with 'flying colors', most of it brown

Dang Jeff!! I told you running old worn out rim brakes on those rims was not a wise idea.
