XC not DH for me

Default SS question

On the rear wheel is there a spacer that I put in? No matter how hard I clamp the tire in the wheel wants to scoot up. It is a brand new wheel so it isnt stripped and it is my first single speed so please bear with me.

Thanks

To quote Sheldon Brown (RIP):

Quote:
Conventional wisdom is that you need a solid (nutted or "bolt-on") axle hub for fixed-gear or singlespeed use, and that a quick-release will not hold the wheel solidly enough in a horizontal fork end. This is not true, however.

Since most newer bikes have vertical dropouts, people have gotten used to wimpy aluminum skewers, and often don't adjust them as tightly as they might.

If you use a good quality (Shimano is the best) skewer , tightened securely, it will hold just fine in any type of dropout or fork end .

But you might find that even with max tension on your skewers, you need chain tugs. Check some out here:

First try filing the paint off the dropouts and make sure there is a washer in there. If that doesn't work go get a surly chain tensioner.

Are you talking about the sliders moving forward in the horizontal dropouts?

For sure! If you get sick of your wheel sliding you can just give up and open a beer!

I didn't realize the detail work doubles as a bottle opener. Sick! Almost makes me sad I have an eccentric BB. Almost...

One of the next challenges you may face even if you have a tensioner is just the opposite problem on the brake side, especially with those big binders you have on there.

With horizontal dropouts, the drive side gets pulled forward, and because of braking forces, the brake side of the rear wheel can move backward. The tensioner can't help that.

Make sure you have a death grip when you're tightening that skewer! Another option is to convert the rear hub to a bolt-on, and ditch the QR.

It is a horizontal drop out. I called my friend and he said something about an allen bolt that I need to tighten.

Yup. I have the Monocog Flight and I believe it uses the same sliders as your Monocog.

EDIT: Now that I look closer they look different.
