A couple of suggestions. 1. - Build up a beefy hardtail and save up for the bigger bike. You can get good burly hardtail frames cheap. 2. - Buy a used frame/bike. Whatever he does tell him to get away from Performance and go to a real shop. They just want to sell bikes off the shelf and usually know little about actual riding. There are so many other options, but it sounds like he is not aware of them at all.
