Default using non-shimano rotors on a shimano system?

Just blew out my rear deore hub on my crappy OEM wheelset...so i figure i will order a set of XT wheels (from JensenUSA it is an amazing deal at 145 a set)...

the old deore hubs take the shimano center lock style discs, so I can't swap over the rotors from that set.

so the question is, can i run other rotors? hayes, etc? or do i have to buy the shimano 6 bolt dealeos?

You can run other rotors as long as they are the correct diameter. I think Shimano makes some of the best rotors.

That Deore hub can be fixed, and those OE XT hubs are not noticeably better than the Deore hubs you have. If it is a blown freehub, that is about a $30 part. I think center lock is better than 6 bolt.

well, i really thrashed the rear hub...didn't do much maintenance on it, so i actually seized it. oops. i could replace the hub i guess and get the wheel rebuilt but for that price i can basically get a new set of the xts. from what i read the hubs feel similar but the seals are better on the xt's, thus giving them a longer life...

yeah i like the center lock discs, so easy to get on and off. just seems like hubs with the center lock mount are hard to come by except on the xtr sets.

Hopefully they don't squeel like my 6" XTR 975 center loc metallic disc brakes do.

If you're hearing too much noise with the metallic pads, try swapping them out to the resin pads. They may not perform as well as the metallics on long DHs, but they're said to be quieter.

Thanks, yes, I have considered doing just that. I am also curious whether Shimano has 200 mm center lock rotors, and if so, whether swapping my 160's with them might help the squeeling due to the increased surface area?

1. Less work to take on and off.

2. Less threaded bolt holes equal less opportunity to destroy the hub.

3. I kind of think you save weight if all else is the same.

4. cleaner look.

Even seized, I would bet that we could fix your hub for around $50 parts and labor.

definitely agree, they are so easy to get on and off with way less chance of messing up a bolt hole...

50$ parts and labor, who's this we you speak of?

My gues is that a new freehub body and a rebuild would fix everything. That would be about $45-$50 parts and labor. We are The path bike shop. We could turn it around in 2-3 days. You can e-mail me at tani@thepathbikeshop.com.

Thanks

thanks for the suggestion...i really appreciate it. i don't come down Tustin way very often so doing the 30 plus miles each way 2 times probably won't happen but maybe i will try my LBS to see what they say... at the very least if i replace the rear wheel i will definitely get this one fixed so that i have a backup.
