Default 08 XT brakes

So I finally got around to putting my 2008 XT brakes on my SS. Problem is these suckers a soft, mushy, hell they just don't have any power to stop me. I am really PO'ed because I wanted to ride today but have zero confidence these suckers are going to keep me from flying off a cliff if need be.

Anyone else have any issues with these brakes? I have tried everything and have now given up.

That doesn't sound anything like mine. They were perfect right out of the box. Unfortunately, I can't offer you any suggestions because I'm not very mechanically inclined, but I thought I'd just say I haven't experienced it (I have two sets, btw, one on my Yeti and the other on my DH bike).

This might sound pretty obvious, but have you tried bleeding them yet?

I've had just the opposite experience. I've got a set on my 6Point and cb has a set on her Demo7. Both sets felt great out both of the box and after bleeding. I thought the power was a step up from the Saints I was using previously.

I wish I had some advice for you. You've already tried a bleed, which would have been my first step. I assume you've given them a chance to bed in?

Yo Eric, I just installed a set F+R on B5driver's ride. I had to shorten both lines and then rebleed them. After the second bleed they were hard as rocks. You can bring 'em by if your in the area today and we can check 'em out.

I bought a set 2 weeks ago & had them installed by the path & they were perfect. amazing stopping power, not mushy & very re-active.
i'm thinking it's either air in the lines or faulty brakes. once dialed in, I think you're gonna be in love with them. good luck!

oe other thing to check is both the reach adjust and the free stroke screw. adjusting both can make a big diff to the feel of the brake. I've run mine everywhere from Bootleg to the alps, with no issues....One nice thing about them is that you can set them up exactly how you like to ride...

here's the PDF from Big S

http://bike.shimano.com/media/techdo...9830615973.PDF

hope it helps!

Mine were squishy at first I shortened the lines and they were still slightly squishy, but as they broke in they have become stiffer, so that could be part of it, but like biglimey play with the free stroke and reach that might fix it.

To be honest, if you're not using the Shimano rotors, you might have issues - They're not the same thickness. The Avid rotors are the closest match, but the Shimano ones will work best.

Another couple of things with these brakes - They REALLY respond well to a bedding in on the street. What I've found works well is to get cranking down the street, then grab a handful of brake and come to a quick stop. Then pedal away, get up to speed and repeat. Do that for 5-10 minutes and they really start to come around. That's how I used to bed-in MX brakes and I always had great luck with that method.

Do not allow them to get hot and stay hot when brand new, ie dragging them down a hill.

Also, be careful when cutting and bleeding - As with most any hydraulic brake system, be it car, moto or bike, it's easy to get bubbles in there that don't want to come out. I've found that the 08 XT's collect bubbles on the hose side of the caliper and just under the fluid reservoir and you have to tap these areas with the blunt end of a screwdriver (or something else equally non-marring) and slowly work the bubbles out while bleeding the fluid through. Don't be stingy on the fluid, make sure you pump enough though that you've really gotten all the bubbles out.

I put the 08 XT M775 brakes on my Intense Uzzi VPX, and they are mushy. Even after bedding them in, and 3+ rides, I feel like they don't deliver the braking power I was hoping for. They have gotten a little better as time went on. If things don't improve after a few months, I am going to try the Formula the Ones, which is supposed to be the best right now.
