Has to take my fork back to The Path for some more TLC............It was getting long in the tooth so they need to do a few more things to it.

Should have it back Friday or Saturday and plan on riding it Sunday (San Juan) with the STR crew

I have been on my Reba/Pike conversion for a few rides now. First off I did not think the stock Reba was that bad of a fork...I know many complain about it being flexy. Apparently I have gotten used to the flex because I only notice it after riding the RFX with a Zoke66 on it. The carbon rigid fork on my One-9 is also flexy.

Downsides, more weight (.57 lbs), flex and added expense I can think of no other downsides. Big benefit for me was slacker headangle as I put a 5mm King crownrace on the fork and lost no small bump compliance. With the extra heavy Pike spring and my weight (220) the fork rides higher in its travel while maintaining better small bump compliance. I gained 7/8 inches of travel so now it is 4 7/8 travel fork. The lockout still works and I gained a travel adjust u-turn fork. Taking into consideration the low cost of the upgrade and that my Reba was near being out of warranty and way overdue for service, the upgrade was a easy decision to make.

Still waiting for a review, other then the easy travel adjust I dont see any reason to do this to my reba unless I get super bored, the air sprung fork rides great and doesnt spike hard, 110mm is pushing it for the reba at 100mm it is noticeably flexy at a stop with the brakes pulled in.

As far as a review, much has already been said on MTBR. The quality of the travel is improved. As I pointed out in a earlier post, I did it to gain more pedal clearance on my RIP. I have a RFX to ride when I need a bike with a stiffer fork. Having owned a bike for 3 years with a rigid fork that does flex, flex is not always bad. Besides some have already made up there minds that the conversion is not worth it on your bike and riding style.

As Dean pointed out there are a bunch of reviews on MTBR. From what I read and parking lot testing Karl’s fork it feels great. To me a coil has a better feel than an air fork. Not to say that air forks feel bad!

For me……….the pros
  • Ramp-up. The coil will allow for more use of the travel.
  • Small bump compliance
  • Increased travel
  • Adjustable travel (bb height etc)
The cons……..
  • The cost (about $100 with labor)
  • Increased weight
  • Additional flex (if used above 100mm)
Again the conversion was the right thing for me to do with this Reba because it needed some work. I have another Reba that will remain as an air fork (for now).

I really miss having an adjustable travel fork on my trail bikes. Lowering the travel on long climbs and raising it for the DH is pure bliss

Interesting. I have a spare Pike spring here at home. But I'm a little wary about increasing travel because for someone at my (massive) weight, it's probably best to just leave it at 80mm.

if you are over 200lbs you need the extra firm spring

Thanks for the link.

That is the first I have seen of those, and they look super good on paper. I like everything they are saying, and the market has needed TA forks in this travel range for a long time. Those have to be '09.

Wonder how much travel we can get out of a 09 Reba with a Pike Coil conversion? One of the things that made them so attractive in the past was the pricing...oh well.

Just wondering and maybe this was asked but..this is a 2-9 conversion only right? or is this something you can do to a 2-6 Reba as well? Educate me.

Sorry looks like there is a dual air on the Team model. I would guess you could convert your fork. However check with your LBS
