Default cage length?

Im thinking of upgrading my chumba evo to a sram x.o setup and I was wondering if I should get the long cage or the short cage. I like riding my bike at fontana and doing dh type stuff, but I dont want shifting to suffer (but anything is better than I have right now). What would you reccomend?

The simple answer that works most times is this: 3 rings in the front, run a long cage, 2 rings in the front, run a mid cage, 1 ring in the front run a short cage. If you have a tight road type cluster, you can sometimes run a short cage with a double ring. Running longer than recomended will not cause a problem asside from ground clearance. Running shorter than recomended will lead to trouble taking up all the chain slack in some gears.
